We’re a month or two into 2016 now, so it is time to look ahead at the year to come in terms of cinema. Today, I will be counting down the 10 films I simply can’t wait for this year. There’s also going to be some honourable mentions at the end, because 2016 is such a packed year that I can’t choose just ten. Without any further ado:

#10 – Doctor Strange

Details are pretty thin on the ground for this one, but from the photographs recently released of Benedict Cumberbatch as Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, I can tell this one is going to be fantastic. This is set to be Marvel’s wackiest, most mystical entry yet, and with a great Cast behind it, I’m sure Doctor Strange is going to be a mystical treat.

#9 – Grimsby

Although comedy isn’t necessarily my genre of choice, I am a massive fan of British comic Sacha Baron Cohen, especially his work as Borat and Ali G. That’s why I’m incredibly excited for Grimsby, a spy-comedy caper set in the British town. I can’t wait to see all the typical British stereotypes and Cohen’s classic comedy mixed with an interesting, action-packed spy plot. Definitely one to look out for.

#8 – Finding Dory

I have to say that I’m a huge fan of Disney Pixar films, which is why I simply cannot wait for Finding Dory. I was a huge fan of 2003’s Finding Nemo, so I can’t wait to see where this pseudo-sequel starring Ellen DeGeneres’ Dory in her very own adventure. Although I haven’t kept up with Pixar’s most recent entries, I’ll be sure to check this one out as soon as possible to relive some childhood nostalgia.

#7 – X-Men: Apocalypse

After 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past blew away my expectations, I was foaming at the mouth to see a sequel. Although the original cast such as Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman are absent, the young cast led by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender has blown away my expectations, and with a really interesting premise and a pretty great trailer already in our hands, I’m really looking forward to seeing how this one pans out.

#6 – Suicide Squad

I’ve always been more of a DC rather than a Marvel man, so I’m ecstatic that 2016 is the year that DC’s cinematic universe finally kicks into gear. Unlike the other entry we’re getting this year (more on that later), Suicide Squad seems unlike any superhero film we’ve seen in a while. The Comic-Con trailer was outstanding, and with such a fantastic cast and brilliant team behind the scenes, August can’t come fast enough to see DC’s best villains work together to do some good.

#5 – Deadpool

Now this one is really exciting. Deadpool is unlike anything we have ever seen before with the superhero movie genre, and trailers and marketing have been nothing short of perfect. Although it’s a very hard sell to those not in the know with comics, Deadpool is sure to be one of the funniest, most violent and most entertaining film’s we’re getting this year. I just hope I can get into a screening.

#4 – The Revenant

A bit of a break from all the action/comic book movies, The Revenant is the latest film from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, director of one of my favourite films of last year, Birdman. This is unlike anything he’s ever done before, and has a masterful cast such as Leonardo DiCaprio – who I’m praying will finally snag the Oscar this year – and the ever-fantastic Tom Hardy. It’s bound to be complex, a little baffling and pretty gruesome, but The Revenant may well be the best film 2016 has to offer.

#3 – Captain America: Civil War

When the Marvel Cinematic Univere Phase 3 lineup was announced back in October 2014, there were two films that really stood out to me: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Captain America: Civil War. Based on the Marvel comic of the same name, this entry is set to change the face of the MCU forever, implementing beloved new characters such as Ant-Man while adding staples of the brand such as Spider-Man, all while holding on to main players like Iron Man and Captain America. It’s going to be absolutely huge, and I can’t wait to see how the battle of the world’s highest-grossing heroes is going to unfold.

#2 – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

After Star Wars: The Force Awakens became my favourite film of 2015, I couldn’t have been more excited for the next entry in the saga. This year, we’re getting a really interesting prequel (no, not those prequels) story. With a fantastic director in Gareth Evans and a young, talented cast headed by Felicity Jones, I can’t wait to delve back into the galaxy far, far away for a much darker, grittier, but just as interesting entry into my favourite saga.

#1 – Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

This may not come as a huge surprise to some of you, but I feel like I may need to justify myself a bit more here. Batman has always been my favourite hero (I did a nine-part Batman series last summer), and now that Christopher Nolan’s terrific Dark Knight Trilogy has come to a close, I am so excited to see how Zack Snyder is going to bring the Caped Crusader into the growing DC cinematic universe. The first two trailers absolutely blew me away, even if the third was a bit rubbish, and this looks to be the most authentic cinematic Batman we may have ever seen. Ben Affleck looks perfect for the role, and the promise of seeing the Trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Women on the big screen for the first time in history ensures that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is the film I’m looking forward to most in 2016.
