Rock On!

From Garry Marshall, on Barry Katz’ Industry Standard Podcast:

I have a philosophy.  It’s called “The Myth of Sisyphus.” . . . It’s about the guy – the Greek God – who did something wrong, who knows, and he was relegated – the Gods said he had to push this rock up the hill. Once it got to the top of the hill, it rolled down again. So he had to walk down the hill and push it up again.  This is what he did forever.  Infinity.  Well, I thought that’s what life was about when I was growing up, but then I figured out . . . he had a choice when he came down the hill – he could either say, “Now I gotta go down the bottom of the hill and push the rock up the hill again, this is what I do,” or as he’s walking down he could say, “I have no rock!  I’m walking down the hill!  Look at this! I could whistle, I could look at the sky, I could do whatever I want! I’m walking down the hill!” So I chose to do that.  So life is not not pushing the rock up, it’s just, you get a moment. So when you take that moment walking down the hill, that’s what is called the moment where life is good.  . . . More and more I’m getting people to look at that when they’re depressed. So pushing a rock is part of my life, and part of Ron Howard’s and part of everybody’s in this strange business.
