Why Does the Dissertation Word Count Petrified Students So Much?

When students are facing the prospect of completing a 10,000 words (plus) Dissertation, with very little structured support can be extremely daunting, even to the most confident student can face this problem.

Throughout the majority of your academic life, you have followed teacher's orders, a government agreed syllabus, a well researched reading list. But when for the very first time you have being given the freedom to undertake your own research project, to explore areas where no man has gone before, to show your own creativity within the given timescales. Students get petrified!

Therefore, in this Dissertation topics article I will try to provide you a brief overview of some of the things that you should look to deal with, when considering the problems you may have with your word count of your dissertation.

At first you have to consider that in 10,000 words (plus) dissertation writing which part of your dissertation will count as a word for example: your footnotes, title (i.e. main heading/question), subtitles/subheadings, and bibliography will NOT count towards your Dissertation because they are not part of the main body of your work and, with regards to the footnotes and bibliography, are meant to give your work greater credibility and legitimacy by showing that you are able to utilize other people's views in your work and critique them.

Now second comes that what type of dissertation your tutor asked you to complete? Are you able to use the advice and guidance of your tutors? Does the dissertation have to be based on subject-matter that has already been covered in your classes, or are you able to carry out a piece of original research? Are you asked to use a form of 'in-text' referencing like Harvard Referencing?

These all above mentioned issues are important because when you cover all these parts which can make a difference in your word count limit than you could make the difference between an 'A' and a 'C' grade or even a 'PASS' or a 'FAIL'.

Therefore, when it comes to producing any piece of work according to a dissertation word count I would advise you to have the following word in mind - 'PLANNING'.

Now a question comes in mind that what would be my planning?
Well, when thinking about to plan your Dissertation I would look to consider its structures as being an essential aspect of this aspect. I would advise you to first ask yourself the following five questions -

- What am I being asked to do?
- What does this mean to me?
- How will this effect my writing style?
- What do I already know about what I have been asked to write about?
- Where can I find more information?

The answer will make you think about the structure of your work which you can then detail in the first paragraph by way of an abstract (particularly for a thesis as well). Then the next paragraph will be your 'actual' introduction that serves to present the main issue that is to be discussed and its importance to the particular aspect of the subject area you are studying.

After that your work should be looking to consider matters related to this issue so that, for example, if you are asked to consider the ‘HR provision in prison and wider criminal justice system’ you may begin by saying why this issue is so important before then looking at what successes their have been and the efforts made to deal with any problems.

Then, finally, you should be looking at concluding with a summary of the key points derived from your discussion relating to the overall subject matter that you have been analyzing so as to draw the work to a close.

Of course these rules may need to be adapted depending on the nature of the work that you have been set, but in principle these are just some of the thoughts that go through my head when thinking about the Dissertation help by an article.
