British woman jailed for killing lover with poisoned curry

2010/02/12

LONDON: A British Woman was jailed for a minimum of 23 years yesterday for murdering her former lover by lacing his curry with poison.

Lakhvir Singh, 45, killed Lakhvinder “Lucky” Cheema, 39, because she was consumed by jealousy about his engagement to another Woman, her trial at the Old Bailey in London was told.

Cheema had been due to wed fiancee Gurjeet Choongh, 21, on February 14 — Valentine’s Day — last year, but three weeks before the wedding the couple fell ill after eating vegetable curry at their home in Feltham, west London.

The poison was identified as Indian aconite, known as the Queen of Poisons. Singh was found guilty on Wednesday of murdering Cheema and causing grievous bodily harm to Choongh.

The married woman, who has three children, had been Cheema’s lover for 16 years before he started a relationship with Gurjeet. Detective Inspector Tony Bishop of London’s Metropolitan Police said Singh had refused to recognise her guilt.

“It should be noted that despite the weight of the evidence against her, she steadfastly refused to admit her guilt, attempting to place the blame on another family member, and forcing those closest to Lucky and Gurjeet to give evidence in court,” he said. -- AFP
