HMPOD.com Podcast 144 — 300: Rise of an Empire, 47 Ronin, Dark House (aka Haunted), Camp Dread

Put some pants on, Greek warriors!

Howdy-do folks. Welcome to another edition of The Horror Movie Show, hosted as always by your best pals Mark & Jerry. This week the guys begin the program with a couple of blockbusters & end on a different note altogether.

Big, big money is behind 300: Rise of an Empire, the follow-up to the 2006 semi-homoerotic 300. The first time around, the producers gave us a movie in which a bunch of super-warriors from Sparta took on the might of the Persian military in a no-holds-barred battle. Eight years later, we watch the best of the rest of the Greek forces fighting their part of the war. The result is certainly bloody.

Another movie focused on violence is 2013′s 47 Ronin, starring the stoic (some might say wooden) Keanu Reeves as a half-Japanese warrior trained in magic by some sort of race of aliens or demons or CGI effects. Is the movie worth watching? Do you like two-day-old sushi?

Dark House, originally titled Haunted, is a worthy spookfest with a cast of newcomers. The big exception is horror favourite Tobin Bell (Jigsaw in the Saw franchise), who commands some of the creepiest monsters seen in a while. Careful with that axe, Eugene….

Camp Dread, starring the often-great Eric Roberts & scream queen Danielle Harris. In fact, Danielle is barely in the movie — which is a drag. Quite possibly, this flick should have been titled Camp Dreadful. Listen now for the whole story.
