Renny Harlin set to direct upcoming The Strangers sequels

News broke yesterday that one of the greatest entries in the home-invasion subgenre of horror – The Strangers is set to get three new sequels – which are currently in development.

During Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast, producer Roy Lee stated: “I think the next three are in production next month with another filmmaker that people will know.”

Further news has broken via Bloody Disgusting regarding a potential director for these films.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Renny Harlin is on board to direct one if not all three brand new upcoming sequels in The Strangers franchise.

Harlin has a long history in the horror genre, most notably directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master in 1988. Harlin’s horror credits also include Prison (1987), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), The Covenant (2006), and Devil’s Pass (2013).

Outside the horror genre, Harlin has directed notable films including Die Hard 2 (1990), Cliffhanger (1993), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), and The Legend of Hercules (2014).

Harlin’s movies have earned over $520 million in the United States and over $1.2 billion in the worldwide aggregate box office, making him the 148th highest-grossing director in the global film market as of October 2021, and the most internationally successful Finnish filmmaker in terms of revenue.

Bryan Bertino original was made on a budget of $9 million, the film became a sleeper hit, grossing $82 million at the box office worldwide.

The plot follows Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) whose stay at a vacation home is disrupted by three masked criminals who infiltrate the home. The screenplay was inspired by two real-life events: the multiple-homicide Manson family Tate murders and a series of break-ins that occurred in Bertino’s neighbourhood as a child.

The Strangers: Prey at Night (also known as The Strangers II: Prey at Night) starring Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman, Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, and Damian Maffei. It was written by Bertino (who wrote and directed the first film) and Ben Ketai.

A sequel to The Strangers (2008), the film follows a family vacationing to a secluded mobile home park, where they are attacked by three masked thugs – and grossed $32.1 million worldwide on a budget of $5 million.

Bloody disgusting also commented that the only other time anything like this has happened was with Netflix, who produced three Fear Street films back-to-back-to-back with a single filmmaker. Could the new Strangers sequels be invading Netflix?

The new Strangers sequels do not have official release dates yet, but production is set to get underway this September so expect to see further details over the next few weeks.
