Writer/director Kevin Smith and kids animation studio WildBrain (Yo Gabba Gabba) are teaming up to develop a family-friendly Green Hornet animated series based on the comic-book hero.
“It’s an honor to escort the legendary Green Hornet and Kato into their very own animated series for the first time in the rich history of these iconic pop culture characters,”
Smith said in a statement.
“We’ll be telling a tale of two Hornets – past and future – that spans generations and draws inspiration from a lifetime spent watching classic cartoons and amazing animation like Batman: The Animated Series, Heavy Metal, and Super Friends. I can’t believe WildBrain gave me this job and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity to extend my childhood a little longer.”
Set in the present day, the series “follows the adventures of a re-imagined Green Hornet and Kato – now the grown son of the original Green Hornet and the daughter of the original Kato – as they partner to battle crime in Century City!”

Created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, Britt Reid/Green Hornet made his debut in an eponymous radio program in 1936. The genius detective and newspaper publisher fought crime alongside his partner Kato. In their adventures, the two often employed the technologically advanced Black Beauty car to help defeat crime. The character appeared in serials in the 1940s, and, in the ’60s, Bruce Lee starred as Kato in a TV series based on the property. There was also ‘The Green Hornet‘ film starring Seth Rogen as the titular hero released in 2011, which earned $227.8 million at the global box office and mixed reviews from critics. Amasia acquired the rights to the franchise in January following a bidding war, and they were optioned by Universal Pictures in April.
Kevin Smith and WildBrain’s Green Hornet series has yet to receive a release date and is currently being shopped to broadcasters and streamers.
