Partying With Vampires

I'm getting an early start on today's review. So far anyway. I don't know how soon I will get it done, but at least I have the movie already watched. I didn't have much to do this morning, so I decided to go ahead and get my next Netflix DVD watched. I've had the DVDs here at home for a while now, so I'm sure they are glad to get them back at long last. For today, it ended up being the movie Vampire Party (2008), or Les dents de la nuit, which translates into The Teeth Of The Night.

Sam (Patrick Mille) loves to party. Not a night goes by that he isn't out having a good time somewhere. On this morning, as he wakes up, he doesn't have any plans for the night. He calls his friend Alice (Frédérique Bel), but she already has plans. Alice has been invited to a female only party and then plans to go out with the boyfriend after. Sam then calls his other friend Prune (Julie Fournier), who tells Sam that she was invited to the same party as Alice. Not letting this get in the way of a good time, Sam dresses up like a woman in order to get into the party. Alice ends up being upset because her boyfriend has broken up with her. A guy who is passing by gives Alice an invitation to a party called "Medici Night". Sam has heard of the party before and says it is legendary. He manages to get a couple of more invites from the guy and they head to the party. Little do they know that the party is being held by vampires and everyone who has been invited is just there to be food.

Vampire Party is from co-directors Stephen Cafiero and Vincent Lobelle. They are also co-writers along with Jean-Patrick Benes and Allan Mauduit. The film also manages to be from Luxembourg, Belgium, and France. I think it is mostly from France since everyone speaks French in it. I was a little surprised that it was from another country. I knew I have a series of movies on DVD from other countries lined up on Netflix, but I didn't think this was one of them. Guess I just wasn't paying attention. Anyway, I wasn't sure if I would like Vampire Party just because it became obvious from the start that this was a comedy with vampires and not so much of a horror movie. It took a while for the story to become something I would laugh at. I liked that Sam was willing to do just about anything to get into a party. Outside of that, I wasn't finding anything to laugh at. Eventually, it did happen when one of the vampires has some werewolf in him. That character made laugh pretty good. I wasn't into Vampire Party a lot, mostly because some things didn't make a lot of sense to me. Like one character reveals that they can bless water, making it holy. The character does this rather late in the film and it made me wonder why this character didn't do this well before the scene they actually do it in...or after that for that matter. I figure since it was a comedy, they weren't all that worried about things like that. I may have only laughed once, but there were other things that I found somewhat funny as well. One of the characters would dream of Titanic every time he met a woman he liked. It was kind of funny the first time, okay the second time, and I thought it was overkill when it started to happen again a third time. To my surprise, it managed to be kind of funny again the third time around. I won't spoil the why of that, though. There is also a book that the vampires want and there are some spells that help vampires transform. This was also somewhat funny just because of the oddball things they turn into.

No real effects to be found as far as gore goes, outside of bite marks that is. There is some blood. The biggest scene with a lot of blood had to do with the main dance floor being cleaned up. There was blood all over everything in that scene. The makeup effects for the vampires was just okay looking. At times they would have some weird looking teeth/fangs for some odd reason. The acting was pretty good. I enjoyed the three leads a lot and found both of the lead women to be pretty cute, not that it has anything to do with acting, but it is always a plus to have nice actors to look at. Vincent Desagnat, Sam Karmann and Hélène de Fougerolles also had some fairly big roles in this film.

Usually, when I think of moves from France, I always think of the real gory films. I haven't watched films from France that weren't all that gory, but I was still surprised that Vampire Party was a comedy send up. A not too bad one at that. It is hardly my favorite vampire comedy, but it is still a fun film for what it is. It could have been better, mostly by not repeating the same type of jokes so much. If you like these types of films, or you are just interested in seeing how the French handle a vampire comedy, check it out someday. I got it on DVD from Netflix. From what little I read, it is hard to find.
3 out of 5 It would be weird be wierd to be sniffed by a guy
