Ernest Cline Provides Update On His ‘Ready Player One’ Sequel

Ready Player One writer Ernest Cline has provided an update as to where he is up to with the sequel to his hit 2011 book, which has seen Steven Spielberg adapt it into a Box Office hit.

Since it’s release back in 2011, Ernest Cline’s nostalgic Sci-Fi novel ‘Ready Player One’ took the world by storm and has now been made into a Steven Spielberg production, in cinemas now.  The book has over 400 Pop Culture and historical references built-in to its 119,040 words. This article is Mainly about the novel, not the movie.

If you’ve never read Ready Player One, it’s one that must be read! Get it here. You can also get Ernest Cline’s other more recent science-fiction novel Armada here.

The book is set in 2045 and tells the story of Wade Watts, one of the millions of geeks worldwide who live their life plugged in to a realistic alternate-world Virtual Reality simulator called the Oasis. When the creator of the OASIS James Halliday dies, he leaves a video in his will that the billions in fortunes of the OASIS and the rights to the universe itself will go to the person who finds the meticulously hidden Easter Egg in one of the thousands of worlds in the OASIS. Upon searching for it, competitors must solve riddles from Halliday himself, many of which contain hidden 1980’s trivia questions. Wade Watts sets his eyes on finding the Egg along with millions of geeks, along the way he meets both friends and enemies and faces many trials and tribulations.

When the screenwriter of Spielberg’s movie adaptation Zak Penn was asked if he knew any information about a potential Sequel, he told Den Of Geek: “Ernie’s working on a sequel to it [Ready Player One], and it is one of those great ideas that has endless possibilities. And to a certain extent, the longer it exists and the more Ernie thinks about it, the more he comes up with.”

Cline also recently spoke out for the first time about the sequel, saying that he will explore other forms of pop culture, and says it would be boring to use the same references over again. “The fun of the sequel for me would be exploring other facets of pop culture that I love and not just using the same ones over again,” Cline said.

He continued, “That’s one of the reasons that I’m drawn to write more stories in this world. It was a lot of work creating the OASIS and the rules of the OASIS, but the OASIS was kind of the ultimate video game, and the ultimate entertainment platform, and that’s a very fun landscape in which to tell stories.”

Providing an update as to where he is up to with Ready Player Two he teased that e’s been working on it for about a year:  “I’ve been working on it this past year, while I was in between visiting the set and helping with post production. I was already kind of back in the world of Ready Player One anyhow, by helping on the movie, so it was a very natural process for me to go back to writing the sequel.”

This has got us thinking about a return to the OASIS. Read below about potential story-lines.

So what could a sequel even be about? The book had a pretty solid ending with all story-lines coming at a close and no serious cliff-hangers.

The big red button? When Wade finds the egg and speaks with Halliday, he shows Wade the ‘big red button’ which he says, when pressed, the whole OASIS is destroyed completely. Surely a story-line surrounding that would make for a great sequel? Maybe somehow a user manages to press the big red button? It’s all questions really.

What do you think will happen in the sequel?
