Terry Pratchett’s Discworld to be adapted into a TV Series

The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett is the latest fantasy to merit the adaptation to TV.

The Series is currently in very early stages of development, so we do not know of any castings or release dates. What we do know is that the rights have been picked up by the BBC for a six-episode initial season with a view for more episodes should the series become a success. It is being developed under the working title The Watch.

Simon Allen is taking on the role of producer for the show along with Pratchett’s production company Narrativia. Simon Allen is best known for his work on Strike Back and The Musketeers. Narrativia is now ran by Terry Pratchett’s daughter Rhianna.

For those of you who are not familiar with Discworld, it is a flat disc balanced on the backs of four elephants which in turn stand on the back of a giant turtle, Great A’Tuin. There are 41 novels in total.

BBC are not the only network looking to fill the huge fantasy gap when Game of Thrones sadly leaves us in 2019, with Lionsgate making huge moves and adapting the award-winning Patrick Rothfuss fantasy epic The Kingkiller Chronicle into a TV show and movies, produced by non other than Lin-Manuel Miranda. Netflix have a TV series of The Witcher in development. Amazon are bringing Lord of the Rings back in the form of a TV series as well as another adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. It’s certain that in the coming years there will be no shortage of quality fantasy!

Do you think Discworld will make a good fantasy adaptation?
