Vikings Renewed For Season 6 By The History Channel: All Details

History have renewed their hit show ‘Vikings’ for a season 6! Read all of the new season details below.

The renewal was coming, with a open-casting recently being held in Ireland and during the Vikings panel at SDCC, creator Michael Hirst said that he had already started writing season 6. Now, however, we have an official confirmation from a press release by the History Channel. Season 6 will emulate both seasons 4 and the upcoming 5th season by having another whopping 20-episode season.

Series regular Katheryn Winnick is set to helm one episode in season six, marking her directorial debut. Production for season six is slated to begin this fall in Ireland.

Expressing his excitement for season 6, writer Michael Hirst offered this thanks to both supporting networks HISTORY and MGM and also teased an unexpected revelation in the future of the show. Read what he said below:

“It has been my pleasure and my privilege to work with HISTORY and our partner MGM over five seasons and 69 episodes of ‘Vikings.’ Now we are ready to begin production of a 20 episode season six that will deliver a huge and unexpected revelation to our audience. There are many reasons why I love this show, not least for the commitment and creativity of everyone involved in making it, but perhaps even more important is the spirit that drives this production – one of the happiest, most collaborative and most authentic productions I have ever been involved with. And so we sail on.”

Season 6 trailer spoilers: The sixth installment will be the first season to take place without original protagonist Ragnar Lothbrok. The season trailer gave us a first glimpse at a possible new antagonist, Bishop Heahmund, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. We’ll also see an exciting Civil War between the Vikings as Ivar wants to kill Lagertha for revenge after she killed his mother.

Alongside all talk of season 6, we’ve also got a bit of season 5 news for you, and it’s great news too. Season 5 will begin with a feature length 2-hour premiere. How excited are you for this? It’s almost movie length!

VIKINGS Season 5 airs November 29th on the HISTORY Channel and is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
