Music Review: Charlie Puth (feat. Selena Gomez) "We Don't Talk Anymore"

Disclaimer: This is a review of the Song 'We Don't Talk Anymore' from the album 'Nine Track Mind'. Everything down below are my personal opinions. I'm in no way affiliated with any corporation, especially Charlie Puth, Selena Gomez or Atlanta records.

I've casually talked about this song before, while reviewing Attention and It Ain't Me, but it deserves it's own post. I haven't kept it a secret that I'm not a big fan of Charlie Puth or Selena Gomez' voices. They both have a similar hollowness that I just can't exactly pinpoint. Charlie, however, can hit some impressive notes on occasion that I can't deny. Them on a song together should be the end of my universe, though, right? No. From beginning to end, ever since I first heard it, I bit my lip and bounced up and down dancing to it. I may not be a fan of his voice, but Puth, with this and Attention under his belt, should teach a masterclass in producing pop music.

The song starts off with Puth's voice over an acoustic guitar and claps, building to the chorus. The way the song effortless blends pop and tropical elements underneath Puth and Gomez' voices is just superb. From my understanding the song is about a breakup, wanting to remain friends but understanding that doing so is much easier said than done. Puth and Gomez are able to capture this dynamic perfectly, displaying a great amount of musical chemistry together.

Who would have thought the two of these artists would be behind one of my favorite songs of the past year?

SONG GRADE: A
