Awaiting OMG 2, Here are 5 movies of Akshay Kumar that highlight social issues and are a must watch

When it comes to script selection, Bollywood’s original Khiladi, Akshay Kumar, has embraced a diverse range of roles throughout his career. Akshay is renowned for starring in films that cast a spotlight on prevailing social concerns in our nation. Currently, Akshay Kumar is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, OMG 2. Yet another movie with a profound purpose. The movie also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam in lead roles. The story is said to revolve around the critical issue of inadequate sex education among children in India. The movie is releasing in theatres on 11 August. Ahead of the release of OMG 2, let’s delve into five other movies which shed light on important social issues, highlighting change.

OMG – Oh My God!

The movie was released in the year 2012. Directed by Umesh Shukla, the movie starred Akshay Kumar as Lord Krishna and Paresh Rawal as Kanji Lalji Mehta, an atheist man who doesn’t believe in God. After an earthquake destroys his shop overnight, the story portrays the atheist’s legal battle against religious institutions when they deny his insurance claim as an “Act of God.” Through humour and strong dialogues, the film questions blind faith, the commercialization of religion, and the essence of spirituality. We genuinely adore Akshay’s portrayal of Lord Krishna, as he impeccably depicted the calmness and composure of the character.

Gabbar Is Back

Released in 2015, Gabbar Is Back boldly confronts corruption and injustice. Akshay Kumar’s character Gabbar resonates as he exposes the failings of the system and empowers citizens to stand against oppression. The film illuminates the significance of collective action and the role of responsible citizenship in shaping a just society. The film is directed by Krish Jagarlamudi. It also stars Shruti Haasan.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha

This 2017 film highlights a considerable number of issues in our society. Akshay Kumar plays the role of a husband who puts in endless effort to eradicate open defecation and promote sanitation in his village. And why does he do this? Simply for his wife. We need more men like him, with zero male ego, willing to go to any lengths. It is based on the true story of Anita Narre from Madhya Pradesh, who refused to go back to her husband Shivram’s home because it lacked a toilet. The film skillfully explores societal taboos, women’s dignity, and the importance of access to clean facilities. Through humor and emotion, it champions women’s empowerment and triggers conversations about hygiene. The film is directed by Shree Narayan Singh.

Pad Man

‘Periods’ this word itself is hushed-down when it comes to talking about it in public. We use words like chumps, or just say ‘it’s that time of the month’. But, Akshay Kumar didn’t hesitate once as he played the inspiring real-life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the man behind low-cost sanitary pad production. He made a pad because he hated seeing his wife Radhika Apte use a cloth. Released in 2018, the film is based on the menstrual taboos, emphasizing women’s health and empowerment. With a mix of sensitivity and advocacy, it sparks conversations about menstrual hygiene. The movie is directed by R. Balki. Kumar is certainly a thought-provoking film.

Atrangi Re

The movie revolves around the sensitive and serious topic of mental health. Akshay Kumar portrays the character of Sajjad, an imaginary lover of Sara Ali Khan who is suffering from Schizophrenia. The movie also features Dhanush in a pivotal role. The film delves into the darker realities of life, such as trauma and a deeper backstory that leads to such issues. Akshay certainly ventured into an untold genre, leaving an indelible mark. Released in 2021, the movie is directed by Aanand L. Rai.

The films mentioned above, whether delving into societal taboos, advocating for women’s empowerment, or shedding light on mental health concerns, collectively highlight the power of cinema. Akshay Kumar as an actor has left no stone unturned to address important social issues in India through these films.
