EXCLUSIVE: Kavita Seth admits pay disparity exists in the industry, says ‘even today male artists are paid more’

Kavita Seth is among the most well-known singers in the country. She has successfully carved a niche for herself in Sufi Music. The singer is best known for her hits like Iktara, Mora Piya, and Tumhi Ho Bandhu among others. Kavita collaborated with her son Kanishk for Jugjugg Jeeyo’s Rangi Sari, which was a humongous success. They recently joined forces for the song Mere Sanam Ke Khwab.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Kavita Seth opened up about the slump in folk music, Iktara being a turning point and the industry being male-dominated.

Kavita on the slump in folk music

The singer shared her thoughts on whether the value of folk music is declining. She said, “I don’t think the value of folk will ever diminish. In fact, if you observe, polishing folk tune a bit and using it in a song or single intrigues people. Sometimes, there is a phase that a certain kind of music is working, but the value of folk will never decrease as that is our roots.”

On Iktara being a turning point

The biggest USP of Ranbir Kapoor’s Wake Up Sid was the melodious Iktara, which still holds a special place in the hearts of music lovers. Talking about how the song was a turning point in her career, Kavita averred, “It’s been 14 years since that song came out and people still love it. I have been singing for 18 years, but after that song, people started recognising my work. After that there also came a responsibility that we have to make sure to take our music quality a notch higher.”

On usage of auto-tuning

What do you think about the new trend of auto-tuning? She exclaimed, “I just want to say God bless to people who are using it. This software was designed to rectify or do minute changes but if you are using it for a complete song that as a singer it will not help you in longer run. These are all temporary things and if you want to be successful you need to do riyaaz and work hard.

Kavita Seth admits male artists are paid more

The gender pay gap has always been a topic of discussion in the film industry. Seconding her thoughts on the same,the singer spoke about the scope for female artists and pay disparity. She said, “The industry has always been male dominating. But this scenario prevails in every field. Now, slowly and steadily women are putting their foot forward and making their names. But still, if you compare male artists are paid more than female artists. Whether it’s in singing or acting.“
