Iconic filmmaker Raj Kapoor's ancestral home 'Kapoor Haveli' in Pakistan's Peshawar is facing demolition threat as the current owner of the house wants to build a commercial complex at its place.
As per a PTI report, constructed between 1918 and 1922, the 'Kapoor Haveli' was built by Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor (father of Prithiviraj). Prithviraj's younger brother and his son Raj Kapoor grew up in the house.
The Kapoor family, originally hails from Peshawar, they migrated to India after the partition in 1947. In 2018, the Pakistan government had decided to convert the Haveli n Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province into a museum, following Rishi Kapoor's request who died in April this year.
The condition of the house is deteriorating due to heavy rains, earthquakes and wind storms. Wealthy jeweller Haji Muhammad Israr is the current owner of the Kapoor's ancestral house. He wishes to construct a huge commercial market at the site by demolishing the haveli. "I have sufficient money to cater to my needs. I supply around 3 to 4 maund (120kg-160kg) gold a week to the Peshawar biggest jewellery market,” he said.
Locals fear that if the government doesn't intervene and conserve the Haveli it might automatically collapse soon.
