Now that the dust has settled on The Rock’s Black Adam, the big DC behemoth teased for over a decade, the home entertainment release is here for audiences to check out. We got our hands on a copy of the Blu-Ray courtesy of Warner Bros., to have a look at the special features and see whether it’s worth your time.

If you love yourself some making-of featurettes, the Black Adam Blu-Ray has you covered. There’s over an hour of new material here, with all the main cast appearing to dish out their two cents on the film. Chief of them all is of course Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who unpacks his motivations for taking the role quite touchingly. It comes down to a deep-seated personal affection to the character’s humble beginnings and unique genealogy, which puts a more emotive spin on a character who is never overly fleshed out in the film.

But it’s perhaps even more illuminating to here what the rest of the cast had to say about the film. Seeing Pierce Brosnan in arguably his most high-profile blockbuster role since playing James Bond was one of Black Adam‘s strength, and it’s interesting to see his attitude towards the sort of CGI-laden projects he isn’t known for. The same can be said for Quinetessa Swindell, the non-binary performer who plays Cyclone. Theirs is a role fairly minimised in Black Adam, but hearing their desire to use the role for positive social change is inspiring.

If you’re a DC Comics die-hard here for all the juicy lore, then you’re in luck. Sadly there’s no Henry Cavill like the film itself, but there’s plenty of discussion with comic writers about Black Adam’s origin. From his days as an out-and-out villain to ultimately a member of the Justice Society – which also receives a standalone featurette – it proves the lineage of this character is a long-running one, with this film the culmination of that progress.

If you’re hoping for some deleted scenes or a commentary track though, you may be disappointed. I would’ve liked to hear director Jaume Collet-Serra and The Rock discuss the long road to getting the film made, as well as some analysis of how they hoped it would shape future DC universe films. While the film itself was a divisive one, those contentious releases tend to make for the most intriguing commentaries.

With over an hour of content to check out, the Black Adam Blu-Ray release will no doubt appeal to those who want to hear from the cast and crew about the film’s development. These aren’t ground-breaking featurettes, but certainly shine a light on the hard work that went into reaching this final product. If you’re hoping for some extra footage or even some lamentation on the film’s cinematic debut, you may be left wanting.
