The Day The Music Schneid – As the episode opens, Cheryl (Emily Piggford) identifies the delinquents as Jonesie (Jaelynn Thora Brooks) and Davey (Veronika Slowikowska).
Back at Schrodinger High, Jonesie describes the universe as “radical.” Cheryl opens her locker to find her ukulele missing when Mr. Schneider (Dan Beirne) approaches. He fears they are going to expose their secret. Davey points out that the portal is broken again. Jonesie sarcastically says it breaks with every use but Mr. Schneider is never at fault. He attributes the frequent breakdowns to their unfamiliar DNA and repeated use. Davey starts singing loudly when the bell rings. When they meet up in the lab, Schneider stresses the need for a debriefing after each use of the portal. Davey and Jonesie readily agree and set out to explore only to be stopped by Schneider. He accuses them of causing anomalies in every universe they visit. Davey makes the mistake of asking what is an anomaly. He gives them a lecture on the Management Organization of the Multiverse “M.O.M” that controls the multiverse.
Schneider explains how M.O.M. operates and labels visitors “delinquents” upon departure. He says an anomaly is the result of a delinquent upsetting the rules of the universe. An anomaly triggers an alert and a Delinquent Acquisition Deputy “D.A.D” is dispatched to investigate. Jonesie asks if D.A.D. and M.O.M. are coincidental or meant to be stupid. Davey asks why he and his mom put a portal in their locker. He assures them that M.O.M. would not be happy if they found out. He claims to have worked for M.O.M. until they began to fear his genius. He blames M.O.M. for being an ordinary science teacher and vows to re-sync himself which is why he created the portal. Davey and Jonesie promise to not cause any disruptions while they wait to return to their home universe. When he informs them of the music ban, they try to stuff themselves into their locker.
Back in the lab, Davey and Jonesie stress the need to have music in their lives. He briefly looks at a cassette stored in his desk before urging them to not do anything to cause an anomaly. Vowing to behave, they go to their next class. The teacher (Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll) challenges the students with a math problem. Having had enough, Davey and Jonesie race to the restroom where they sing and dance. When Sierra (Erika Swayze) hears them from the hallway, it triggers an anomaly. In another universe, Cheryl warns Davey and Jonesie that she is coming for them when Andy (James Hartnett) suddenly appears with a push-along corn popper confiscated from a toddler. She informs him that Davey and Jonesie caused another anomaly. She says their detainment will earn her a transfer from the Juvenile Department. He warns that beaming into her Elite Squad could result in an anomaly. She assures him that she can be discrete before entering a portal. When she arrives at Schrodinger High, she is wearing a suit as part of Andy’s Vice Principal cover. Andy explains how her presence and departure will not cause a disturbance. She deactivates the earpiece to shut him up.
Davey and Jonesie brag about not causing an anomaly. Sierra accuses them of making “muh-sic.” Davey and Jonesie deny the allegation and call her a “rule tool.” Boasting her position as student body vice president, Sierra threatens to report them if it happens again. Davey shrugs off the threat because Sierra’s position is trivial. Jonesie is confident they will not get caught when Cheryl appears. After some thought, they rule out knowing her. Principal Debbie Neighbors (Evany Rosen) intervenes but it suddenly hits her that Cheryl is Vice Principal Mason. After they walk away, Davey and Jonesie realize Schrodinger High never had a vice principal and believe Cheryl has come from the future for them.
Schneider is working on a quantum processor when Davey and Jonesie storm into the room. They ask what would happen if a D.A.D. was dispatched there. He suggests they would utilize a cover to catch them causing an anomaly, then would be detained and sent to detention. Hearing detention is enough to send them running. While assuring himself that they know the rules, he rubs his fingers across the cassette hidden in his desk drawer.
Emile (Nikko Angelo Hinayo), Abbott (Kevin Osea), Mark R. Shirt (Parker Lauzon), and Joyce (Sydney Topliffe) abduct Jonesie and Davey. Emile says they heard their “muh-sic” from the hallway. Jonesie tells them that it is correctly pronounced music and urges them to forget it. Abbott questions how they are supposed to forget something so “beautiful.” Knowing nothing about music, Emile and his friends have been basing their opinions on paintings inside a cave. Joyce shows them their instruments – a metal triangle, a cassette player, and a kazoo. Emile blows into the kazoo, creating a “beautiful” sound. When asked to teach them to create music, Davey and Jonesie weigh the risk of an anomaly.
While Davey and Jonesie teach Emile and his friends how to make music, Sierra is keeping tabs. They try to throw Cheryl off their trail. Debbie complains about paying alimony to Dean. Sierra reports her findings to Cheryl. After seeing Cheryl in the vice principal’s office, Schneider confronts Davey and Jonesie. He informs them that D.A.D. Cheryl is at the school. They assure him that they can handle detention. He warns that a detention dimension could leave them trapped in 10th grade for millenniums. He fears becoming Genetically Restructured as a Nautically Diminished Molecular Abnormal (G.R.A.N.D.M.A.), a brainless animal. Cheryl summons them to the vice principal’s office when Sierra arrives to be their escort. Schneider urges Davey and Jonesie to not incriminate themselves.
In the vice principal’s office, Davey and Jonesie play dumb. Cheryl fails to tempt them with the “Jingle Bells” lyrics. After boasting about her extensive record, Cheryl explains how their case, her 100,000th case, will earn her a transfer from the Juvenile Department. She offers them a short detention dimension for their cooperation or their memories will be erased and friendship gone forever. Hearing everything, Schneider employs Emile and his friends to create a distraction utilizing Stephen’s Mix. With the cassette player in hand, they race to the lab. Abbott stays behind to ask Schneider what will happen. Knowing they will get in trouble, Schneider orders him to join his friends.
Cheryl gives Jonesie and Davey one last chance to confess when Emile dedicates “I’m the Scantman” to them. Cheryl zaps Jonesie and Davey. Debbie transforms into a werewolf and attacks Cheryl. As the school becomes chaotic, Schneider transforms into a werewolf but still activates the portal. Jonesie and Davey hurriedly get inside the locker and shut the door. A short time later, a tattered Cheryl returns to the Juvenile Department. Andy asks about Jonesie and Davey. She vows to be there when their luck runs out. The episode ends.
Davey & Jonesie’s Locker Review
The story mimics the 1989 comedy film, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” but doesn’t get it exactly right. It is difficult to see what the aim is for the two leads. Are they supposed to be loveable idiots like Bill and Ted? If this is the case, Jonesie and Davey are not convincing.
The amount of work invested in the show paid off. It seems to be a hit among young people. The script could be tweaked to add some balance to the story. The episode deserves a 5 out of 10.
