Who’s Jeff – The episode begins with Andy Pruden (Ben Feldman) and Cassie (Perry Mooney) trying to talk themselves out of the situation they’ve gotten into with Audrey (Emily Taheny). The awkward conversation that ensues unveils several shocking discoveries. The most notable is the reveal of Audrey’s special ingredient, roadkill. The next is Andy’s claim that his interest in location Hugo Drivas (Darren Gilshenan) is purely financial. Audrey releases them after promising to keep her secret. Although Cassie calls Andy out on his remarks about his father, he doesn’t reveal anything other than the claim that Hugo has his money. Andy does take note of a drone following him back to the pub, which is revealed to be piloted by Leon Croydman (Rick Donald).
When Andy arrives at the pub, he and Dom (Christopher Kirby) have a pretty revealing phone conversation. Dom not only appears to be speaking to him from an office cubicle but an interaction with a female coworker named, Liliana (Madeleine Jones) suggests that the two of them have some kind of insurance fraud or pyramid scheme going. Dom suspects that Liliana is on to them and it’s only a matter of time before she uncovers the truth. According to him, she had already found one of their accounts but he was able to explain it away as a mistake.
From the General Store/Post Office Noel Pinkus (Stephen Curry) watches a cyclist (Jesse Kennaugh) make his way through town while Sergeant Geraldine Walters (Katrina Milosevic) and Constable Rory (Ethan Gosatti) share an intimate moment. This is soon interrupted by a call from Andy, asking for an update on the investigation. Before rushing off the line, she asks if he ever thought that Hugo doesn’t want to be found.
Someone dressed as an alien in a bright aluminum jumpsuit and helmet pelts Andy with several air rifle rounds before running off. With the giant head start, the assailant doesn’t have a problem making an easy escape. Andy’s subsequent threats and cussing attract the attention of Noel, who has apparently witnessed the entire encounter. After asking to use the Internet and a spirited debate over the proper pronunciation, Noel offers to stitch Andy’s shovel wound. Andy gives it some very careful consideration but takes him up on the offer. While Noel sews him up, Andy learns that Noel has cameras all over the town. Noel says the cameras are for the people in town he doesn’t trust. When asked who he doesn’t trust, Noel mentions someone named Jeff but shares nothing more about him. The question leads to Noel asking if Andy can be trusted. Although that’s not expanded on further, Noel invites him to the adjacent room to see his micronation.
Noel’s micronation is virtually a small model of Bidgeegud that he not only refers to as Bidgeegudland but also intends to have it officially registered as a Principality. According to Noel, the recognition would essentially give Bidgeegudland the right to self-govern. A call in the other room soon draws Noel’s attention. With Noel gone, Andy takes notes of a small outbuilding in the model that he then recognizes outside the window. Andy returns to the pub where he asks Valerie Hogarth (Genevieve Lemon) about Cassie’s whereabouts. Much to his surprise, she’s not only rented the room next to his but she’s put it on his tab.
Andy is in for an even bigger shock when he discovers Leon in his room waiting on him. It’s not long before Leon reveals himself as the drone operator and accuses him of sleeping with Audrey. Andy assures him that nothing happened and Cassie can verify the claim. Leon appears to believe him and even apologizes for jumping to conclusions.
While Andy enlists the help of Cassie to distract Noel, a very short scene shows the cyclist trekking through the Outback. Cassie distracts Noel with the offer of free beauty products while Andy breaks into the outbuilding. Andy doesn’t discover anything he can use in the shed, but after a narrow escape, he learns that Jeff is actually a crocodile.
Later that evening, Sergeant Geraldine shows up at the pub to inform everyone that Hugo has been found dead.
Population 11 Review
The death of Hugo certainly raises some new questions. Although I am not a huge fan of either Cassie or Andy, I must admit that they work as a team. It’s not like they have an undeniable onscreen chemistry but there is something there that just works. I am enjoying learning more about the town, the inept locals, and their desire for Andy’s reward money. It’ll be interesting to see what they have to offer now that Hugo was discovered dead. Not a bad episode. I’d give it a 5.4 out of 10.
