Tackle Tommy Woo Woo – As the second episode of The Gentlemen begins, Jethro (Josh Finan) shows up and collects the money while everything is going on around him. After Tommy is killed, Eddie Horniman (Theo James) tells Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) he knows how bad this is. Susie insists she can help him deal with Jethro. Eddie doesn’t want to kill him. Jethro confirms it is four million. Once he finds out what happened, he promises he won’t say anything because Tommy had it coming. He runs away while Freddy (Daniel Ings) smokes outside. Jethro runs into the woods and hides. Geoff (Vinnie Jones) asks Eddie what they’re hunting. Freddy joins them before they spread out to look for Jethro.
Eddie eventually finds him, but Jethro continues running. Once they stop him, Jethro insists he didn’t see anything. Eddie promises they’re not going to hurt him although Freddy has other ideas. Freddy gets rid of Jethro’s phone. Eddie wants to know who he was trying to contact. Freddy wants them to come. During a group meeting, the priest steps away and puts Maxie in charge. Johnny is told they can’t get in touch with Tommy. They just got a text from Jethro. Errol isn’t sure what the text message means though. Susie tells Eddie to put Jethro in the vehicle so they can take him somewhere safe until they get this straightened out. She tells Freddy to send the staff home.
Eddie reminds Freddy that he is a murderer now. Susie tells Jimmy to engage his brain and keep an eye on Jethro. Jimmy asks him about smoking weed. Eddie tells Susie they need to find a way through this without anyone else getting killed. She says killing is mess and bad for business, but he needs to understand what they’re dealing with here. Tommy was lower than his brother the Gospel. He is also more dangerous. Gospel John (Pearce Quigley) is shown preaching while men are killed. Felix (Dar Salim) gets a call from Susie who has work for him today. A drunk Felix picks up supplies moments later. Eddie speaks to Jethro about how he got into this line of work. Jethro says he didn’t know they were an international crime family with Jesus running the show.
Jethro calls them lunatics. He promises not to say anything to anyone. Eddie says he isn’t the only one he needs to convince. Eddie isn’t sure they’ll kill him. Felix catches up with Susie. Felix and the others get undressed so they can clean up the aftermath of the homicide. He tells Geoff why he’s going to chop the body up into smaller pieces. Felix is introduced to Eddie who wants to talk about Jethro. Eddie thinks they can use him to create an alternative narrative for Gospel. He can suggest that things weren’t good between Tommy and Jethro. They film the performance on Tommy’s phone and stage the body in the boot of the car. Eddie thinks they can make Gospel believe Jethro killed Tommy and left with the money.
Meanwhile, Jethro can be on a container ship to Australia with 2 million pounds in his pocket. Eddie insists he wouldn’t be doing what he is if he had any other options. Felix thinks they should chop his head off. Eddie says he’ll go speak to Gospel. Susie speaks to Eddie in private about it. He reminds her that she said murder is bad for business. Susie gives him 24 hours before she gets the hoover out. Then, Eddie tells Freddy he is going to have to dance again. Stanley (Giancarlo Esposito) prepares for the party and tells Stevens (Alexis Rodney) he wants to add another name to the guest list. He wants to invite the Duke of Halstead and see if he bites. Freddy records the performance in the chicken suit again.
Lady Sabrina (Joely Richardson) brings Eddie Mr. Johnston’s invitation. Susie thinks it’s time she was introduced to Stanley. They sit down and Lady Sabrina begins learning about Freddy’s chicken suit. Freddy begins panicking when he learns the Gospel has called three times. Eddie speaks to John Dixon on the phone. He claims Tommy left there around 11. John asks if he can drop by tomorrow morning to talk things through. After the call, John tells Errol he smells trouble. Before long, John and his crew come over to see Eddie and Freddy. John comes inside to talk about Tommy. Eddie and Freddy insist the business matter was resolved. John says they haven’t heard from either Tommy or Jethro. They only received a cryptic text from Jethro saying, “Tackle Tommy Woo Woo”.
Eddie claims there was an altercation and Tommy became frustrated when Jethro was counting the money. John hopes Tommy has just strayed from the path. When John asks if anyone wants to repent, Freddy confesses he has taken a life. He claims he was responsible for Monty’s death. Outside, John says he felt an overwhelming feeling that his brother’s soul is no longer in his body. They spend a moment in silence before John leaves with his crew. Jethro tells Eddie where he can find his passport. Later, Lady Sabrina admits to Eddie that she knew all along. She thinks he needs to make up his own mind. Sabrina says it poisoned his soul and she doesn’t want the same thing to happen to him. Eddie is going to remove their interest from the estate once it’s been dealt with.
Eddie goes to Jethro’s flat to get his passport. Jimmy talks to Jethro all the while. Eddie calls and tells Jimmy to pass the phone to Jethro. A man sits down in Jethro’s apartment. Eddie gets the passport, but he ends up getting the man’s attention. He jumps on the man’s back in hopes of stopping him from getting his gun. Eddie manages to kill the guy but he gets hurt in the process. Once he gets back, Susie tells him that she believes Stanley wants a piece of the business. She explains that his gear comes with a violent price tag. Stanley comes over and introduces them to Princess Rosanne who used to spend summers there when she was little. In private, Rosanne and Eddie talk about Freddy being passed over.
Stanley talks to Susie about a timepiece he recently purchased. Rosanne tells Eddie that Stanley must be good at whatever he does. Susie is asked if the timepiece is authentic. She says it’s kosher. Stanley doesn’t deal with fakes. Rosanne asks Eddie if he knows what he’s getting himself into. She notices he is bleeding so she wants to help him get cleaned up. Stanley takes Susie outside to discuss business. He is adamant she is going to need a partner. Susie tells him that she’ll call him. Stanley urges her to take her gift on her way out. He explains it’s the watch. Susie goes inside where she finds Rosanne tending to Eddie’s gunshot wound. In private, Eddie tells Susie he got the passport but it was costly. Felix has already dealt with the body.
Eddie explains they’re going to leave the body there to make it look like Jethro killed the guy. John finds Tommy’s body as well as the phone with the video of Freddy’s performance. He visits Eddie and Freddy to tell them. John claims Jethro was a weasel for murdering two men and disappearing with his money. He tells them about the English-made sporting shotgun found in the boot of the car. Eddie admits it was theirs, but they left the gun cabinet unlocked. He suggests Jethro got it when he was unattended. John asks if he could hold onto the gun for a while. He promises the gun will be returned once judgment is manifested. Once they’re alone, Eddie decides to show Freddy their dad’s weed-growing operation. Eddie takes Jethro to the ship and asks him what he was trying to say in the text message.
He explains he was trying to say, “They killed Tommy. SOS.” Eddie tells Susie they won’t see him again. The original agreement was between their fathers so Eddie wants to speak to her father. They meet Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone) who says Eddie’s father was a good man. He asks George to leave. They talk about the prison. Eddie eventually says he doesn’t know why Bobby’s business being on his estate is in his interest. Susie says this is only a meet and greet and not a comprehensive renegotiation. Eddie tells Bobby he wants him off his land by the end of the year. In return, he guarantees to make him much more money. Bobby thinks they’re about to have a proper session. Later, Susie tells Eddie he should’ve run that by her first.
She admits she would’ve shut him down. She says you have to finish the killing once you start it. Felix invites Jethro inside the boat for a warm cup of tea.
The Gentlemen Review
The second episode of The Gentlemen did little to speed up the tedious pace or develop the lifeless characters. The episodes drag on to the point that each has been boring. None of the characters are easy to sympathize with although Jethro was at least a little more likable than the rest. The story is paper thin so it’s going to need to step up the action to keep the hour-long episodes interesting.
Through two episodes, it is hard not to feel like this is an unfunny, purposeless version of McMafia which at least had a sense of seriousness.
