The episode opens in a flashback with Angus Speelman (Iain Glen) dropping baby Gabriel off at the Sunrise Children’s home. A woman finds the baby in a basket with a note that reads, “My name is Gabriel Gigaba.” Seeing his webbed fingers, she looks concerned and carries him inside.

Reyka Gama (Kim Engelbrecht) reports Leon Lombard’s (Frank Rautenbach) death. Speelman calls Royal Edinburgh to speak with Shirley Buchanan. Refusing to connect him to Shirley’s room, the operator insists on knowing his location. He ends the call.

While a paramedic assesses Leon, Reyka claims he was fine when they went to bed. She suggests he experienced a cardiac arrest in his sleep. A paramedic asks if they are married. Reyka says they work together but denies knowing much about his personal life.

Speelman finds Portia (Nokuthula Ledwaba) in her room reading. Referring to her as Sunshine, he asks if she would like a coffee. She asks why he is there. He urges her to wait until they have their coffee. She asks him to return her phone. He pleads with her to have a heart, Shirley is ill. He offers to make her Shirley’s Lowland mash-up recipe. She denies being hungry. He asks her for money. After emptying her wallet, he grabs a hat and heads out the door.

Zwelethu (Palance Dladla) records Ayanda (Samkelo Ndlovu) as she gets ready for work. She orders him to leave. He asks if she is going to shoot him. She says if it is necessary. He threatens to shoot her and put his gun in her. She tells him that he was right, there is a pattern in the killings involving the victims’ shoes. He says the killer has a shoe fetish.

Reyka calls Elsa (Anna-Mart Van Der Merwe) to inform her of Leon dying in her bed. Elsa asks why a married man was in her bedroom before saying she would come home early. Georgina Lombard (Roeline Daneel) arrives demanding to enter the crime scene. Ayanda suggests Reyka leave out the back but she refuses. Reyka tells Georgina after they returned from another search and rescue mission, they had a few drinks and Leon decided stay in her bedroom. Georgina breaks down when she sees Leon’s body.

In a shop, Speelman watches two young girls from behind a shelf. He approaches the girls and asks if they are going to the beach. When the girls don’t respond, he asks which beach before offering them some ice cream. Nicky (Amahle Mthethwa) calls him a creep. The other girl urges her to call the police. He assures them that he is only being friendly before racing out of the shop. The girls scream “pedo alert” as he flees down the sidewalk.

Reyka tells John “Macingwane” Mchunu (Bheki Mkhwane) that she and Leon had an affair for about four months. She assures him that he was fine when they went to bed. He suggests sex could have caused him to have a heart attack. She refuses his offer of compassionate time. He informs her that Minister Matlala wants the Lover’s Lane case closed before the Global Water Summit. He says Lover’s Lane will be closed to the public. She warns that the killer will target another area but the killings will not stop. He orders her to meet with a police psychiatrist to keep Ayanda from ending up like Detective Nandi Cele (Thando Thabethe). She claims Nandi disobeyed a direct order. He says she had an obsession with her. When she refuses to see a psychiatrist, he threatens to terminate her position.

Portia tries to attack Speelman with a knife when he walks through the door. He wrestles the knife away from her. She screams that he is going to kill her. He smashes her head into a mirror and threatens to break her neck if she tries to attack him again. Reyka turns the lock of hair from Maritime Inn over to the lab. While cleaning Portia’s head wound, Speelman asks when she last saw Reyka. She pleads with him to leave her alone. He admits Reyka’s lies broke his heart. She says he is ill. He claims to have been happy in Paradise Valley until the interview. He believes they were a family. She tries to convince him otherwise but he refuses to acknowledge it. She accuses him of stealing Gabriel and Reyka. After finding Reyka in Portia’s contacts, Speelman dials her number. About the same time, Reyka receives a call from Tama (Sello Maake Ka-Ncube) informing her of Speelman’s farm in Eshowe being raided.

Ibrahim Sodhi claims Ula (Taiwo Kazeem) held him hostage for three days at Maritime Inn. He says they ordered his brother to pay a ransom but he didn’t have the money. Ayanda holds out a photo of the body on the beach. He identifies her as Casey H. (Jessie Diepeveen) from Bryanston in Joburg.

At Lover’s Lane, Ayanda sees a young boy watching her. Reyka returns Portia’s call. Portia claims it was a pocket dial. Reyka informs her of Speelman’s escape. When the call ends, he rewards Portia with a kiss. Reyka voices concern about Portia’s strange behavior. Ayanda reminds her that Speelman’s escape is all over TV. Reyka says Portia should have been freaking out. Ayanda suggests sealing off the tunnels but Reyka advises against it. She looks up to see the boy gone. Speelman is cooking when a news report about Leon’s death at Reyka’s airs on the radio. He forces Portia to go with him. Reyka convinces Ayanda to search the tunnel. People are living in the tunnel. They are approached by two men. Jodie (Tamara Skye) urges them to follow her. They run through the tunnels with the men in tow. Jodie leads them to the exit.

Holding Portia at knifepoint, Speelman escorts her to an ATM. A guard asks if she is okay. Speelman assures him that they are okay. He empties her account. She pleads with him to leave some for her as he escorts her away. Reyka takes Jodie to a shelter. Tokkie (Lemogang Tsipa) checks her in. Speelman tells Portia that he is going to Scotland after he digs up information on Gabriel. He accuses her of forcing him to give Gabriel away. She opens her hand to reveal a ring. Jodie leaves the shelter.

Reyka tells Georgina that the pathologist believes Leon suffocated on fluids built up in his lungs. She apologizes for hurting her. Introducing her to Leon’s sons, Georgina says this is who she really hurt. Jodie breaks into Reyka’s house. Elsa finds her getting out of the shower. Jodie convinces her to not call the police. Reyka answers Portia’s call to hear Speelman’s voice. He tells her that he heard about Leon’s death. He accuses her of lying about Shirley. She urges him to meet her. He admits to being hurt by her lies before ending the call. Slater finds Portia in an overflowing bathtub of water. She screams as the episode ends.

Maybe, I’m reading too much into it but it would seem as Speelman’s victim, Portia would have been notified of his escape. Instead, she finds herself yet again in the clutches of her perpetrator. Reyka is notified not by authorities but by Tama. If the police really wanted to catch Speelman, they would have set up surveillance of Portia’s flat.

As a criminal profiler and seasoned police officer, Reyka would know better than to go into the tunnels. Nope, she insists on it, putting her and Ayanda’s lives in danger. It is truly doubtful, they would have made it out alive.
