The Inheritance Series 1 Episode 4 Recap

As the episode opens, Daniel (Robert James-Collier) denies knowing how the money got into his account. D.S. Morris (Risteard Cooper) reminds him of €20,000 being deposited into his bank account a week after Dennis (Larry Lamb). Daniel admits to taking out a bridge loan to get creditors off his back. He tells Morris that he assumed the money from Dennis’ will could be utilized to clear his debt. He says his inheritance was utilized to secure the bridge loan. Morris assures him that the creditor will want the money back. Morris suggests the €15,000 from Gaudete Dynamics would benefit his finances greatly. Daniel assures him that he couldn’t transfer the money into Michael’s account without his bank details. Morris says he may have taken it while Michael was dying since he was present. Daniel tells him that he was being held at gunpoint. Morris warns that the creditor will come for his money.

Daniel visits Sian (Gaynor Faye) to find her with Chloe (Jemima Rooper) who claims Susan (Samantha Bond) is no longer interested in Dennis’ will. She says they are now the sole inheritors of Dennis’ estate. Daniel questions why Susan changed her mind. Sian assures him that it doesn’t matter. He reminds them that Susan killed Dennis. Chloe admits to believing Susan had nothing to do with Dennis’ death. He asks why Susan confided in her. When Chloe doesn’t answer, Sian blurts out that she knew about Dennis and Susan’s affair. Chloe admits to keeping it a secret because Dennis asked her to. He accuses her of telling Pete (Adif Ray) about the affair. Sian vows to never trust him again.

Daniel tells Pete that he no longer needs a loan because the bank will lend him money now that he has Dennis’ house. Pete tells him to take care before taking his frustration out on his bike.

Sian calls Nathan/James (Rory Fleck Byrne) Dennis’ house is now theirs to sell. She admits to being concerned about him before ending the call. Inside Dennis’ house, she receives a call from Chloe informing her of Susan not answering her calls. She says a potential suicide note from Michael was discovered in Susan’s bag. Chloe tells her that the note mentions someone named James when Sian finds Susan unconscious on the floor. Later, Susan’s body is transferred from the house on a gurney. Daniel questions if she truly changed the will. Morris asks when they last saw Susan alive. Sian asks if Susan was murdered. Chloe claims Susan agreed to give them Dennis’ estate before informing him of Michael’s potential suicide note. Searching Susan’s bag, Morris does not find Michael’s letter. He says what happens from here on out will depend on whether Susan has a beneficiary.

Sian accuses Daniel of playing with her and Charlie’s lives. He admits to being in desperate need of money when he thought of Glen. She reminds him that she has been fighting Glen in court for years. He assures her that he is going to clear his debt with Glen today. She warns that Glen will never leave her alone. She asks if he is going to utilize the Gaudete Dynamics loan to pay Glen. He says whoever took out the loan with Gaudete Dynamics wanted Morris to believe it was him. He suggests it could be Susan or Dennis’ killer. She admits to dating Nathan who is no longer taking her calls. Daniel asks if Glen is responsible. Daniel leaves her on the street to meet with Pete. Someone stands outside the window as Daniel signs the contract.

Coroner Jenny Roche (Pauline McLynn) says Susan’s cause of death has been confirmed as a head injury. Chloe suggests Susan suffered a fatal head injury as she prepared to hand over Dennis’ estate. Jenny assures her that there is no evidence to support foul play. Chloe informs her that Susan doesn’t have a will which means her assets, including Dennis’ estate, will go to her family. Jenny says the investigation into Dennis’ death is being closed.

Sian emerges from the cemetery to find Glen waiting for her. He tells her that he doesn’t want to take the money Daniel owes him. She asks why he hurt her. He stresses his desire to rekindle their relationship. She threatens to report him to the police if he doesn’t leave her alone. He asks if she has heard from Nathan.

Chloe tells Pete that Dennis’ investigation is being closed. She says Susan’s estate, including Dennis’ assets, will be handed over to her relatives. As he prepares to tell her about the contract, she receives a call from Morris requesting to see her.

After a failed call to Nathan, Sian conducts a search on Forewood Estate Agents to discover it doesn’t exist.

Daniel tells Glen that the money was transferred to his account. Acknowledging the transfer, Glen says Sian refused his proposal to get back together which would have cleared his debt. He offers him €20,000 to help him get Charlie back in his life. Daniel asks what he did to Nathan. Glen admits to adjusting Nathan’s attitude. Daniel returns his money before threatening to call the police for harassing Sian.

Morris says seven years ago, Barry Lewis’s pathology report revealed a cocktail similar to that of the one found in Dennis’ blood. He tells Chloe that Barry drank himself to death like Dennis. He explains how Barry’s murder was pinned on one of his foster children. She asks what Barry’s murder has to do with Michael’s letter. He says Barry changed his will to leave everything to James Southwell who was paroled 2-1/2 years ago. He adds that Dennis hired a man to help with the yard work before suggesting she conduct her own investigation because the Coroner closed Dennis’ case.

Daniel breaks into Nathan’s caravan to find three home videos. Nathan watches the caravan from a short distance away.

Chloe tells Pete that Morris believes Dennis’ gardener is responsible for the break-in before suggesting he killed Susan. She stresses the importance of connecting James to Dennis’ gardener. Pete reminds her that Dennis made Susan his beneficiary, not James. As she prepares to go to Sian’s house, he admits to giving Daniel €25,000 because he was in trouble with Glen. He claims Dennis was keeping Daniel up. He says the restaurant is theirs but Daniel will still be their chef. She scolds him for trying to take Daniel’s restaurant. He reminds her of how they did everything for them. She says they are her family. He asks what he is to her before she walks out the door. Later, Chloe tells Daniel that Charlie’s sitter claims Sian went to Dennis’ house. He suggests Nathan killed Dennis. She repeats what Morris told her about James. He claims to have found Dennis’ bank records and bioethanol in Nathan’s caravan.

Sian arrives at Dennis’ house. Morris searches Dennis’ house to find a photo of James. Upstairs, Sian compares the writing on the back of a Forewood Estate Agents’ business card with a handwritten note on a calendar. The writing is similar. Elsewhere, Daniel picks up Chloe while showing her a photo of James from Morris. A short time later, they arrive at Dennis’ house to find Sian in the kitchen. Showing them the handwriting comparison, Sian suggests Nathan is Dennis’ gardener. Daniel and Chloe tell her that Nathan killed Dennis and Susan. Holding up Nathan’s photo, he explains James’ background. Chloe says James’ biological mother is Susan. Sian receives a call from Nathan who admits to seeing Daniel at his caravan. Daniel asks if he killed Susan. Nathan (James) accuses Susan and Dennis of killing Michael. When Chloe calls him a “coward,” an armed Nathan approaches and orders them to get on the floor. Tossing zip ties on the floor, he tells Sian to restrain them.

Nathan admits to liking Sian. He douses a flammable liquid on the walls before igniting it with a match. Daniel, Chloe, and Sian try to free themselves while the house burns. Nathan emerges from the burning house to be attacked by Glen. A fight ensues and ends with Glen kicking Nathan in the face. He races into the house to find Sian, Daniel, and Chloe. He helps each of them outside when the police arrive. Two officers escort Nathan to a cruiser while Morris watches. Daniel, Chloe, and Sian watch their father’s house burn as the episode ends.

The Inheritance Review

Daniel finds himself in a desperate financial situation. He borrows €20,000 from Glen to pay down his debt. Sian is none too thrilled when she discovers what he did. Pete agrees to give Daniel €25,000 in exchange for his restaurant. Daniel reluctantly signs his restaurant over to Pete. Chloe refuses to let Pete take Daniel’s restaurant, even though, the €25,000 drained their bank account.

Susan is the sole beneficiary of Dennis’ will. She decides to give all of it to Dennis’ children but dies before the paperwork is filed. After Roche closes Dennis’ case, his and Susan’s estates will go to her closest relatives. Questioning Roche’s decision, Morris checks the database to find a case similar to Dennis’. A cocktail of drugs found in Barry Lewis’s blood is also detected in Dennis’ blood. Lewis was a foster parent at the time of his death. Detective charged his foster child, James Southwell with his murder. James was paroled from prison over two years ago. Morris believes Dennis’ gardener may be James.

Sian is unable to get in contact with Nathan. Glen tries to convince her to take him back but she refuses. He asks her if she has been in touch with Nathan. Glen later tells Daniel that he straightened out Daniel’s attitude. While searching Nathan’s caravan, Daniel discovers Dennis’ financial records and home videos. Sian can’t find any information online for Nathan’s real estate firm. Morris sends her a photo of James who has been posing as Nathan.

James’ biological mother, Susan placed him in foster care as a child. He confesses to killing her and Dennis for what they did to Michael. Nathan sets Dennis’ house afire with Chloe, Daniel, and Sian inside. Glen rescues them.

The fire scene is cringeworthy. Chloe, Daniel, and Sian are restrained with zip ties in the kitchen. Why not grab a knife out of the silverware drawer to snip the zip ties? If your life is in imminent danger, you would hop, crawl, or drag yourself out of a burning out. When Glen rescues them, he props them up against the side of the “burning” house. In the final scene, they watch the house burn only a few feet away. The fire is in the interior, the exterior is unharmed.
