Leave It All On The Ice – As the finale of SkyMed begins, Dougie (Sebastian Buitrago) tries to convince his friend to come jump into the ice-cold water with him, but he won’t. Before he can get in, he slips and crashes to the ground. Hayley (Natasha Calis) tries to come to grips with the recent death. When she boards the plane, she learns that Wheezer (Aaron Ashmore) is flying with Nowak taking time off and Bodie being with the baby. Chopper (Praneet Akills) tells her Wheezer isn’t a fan of medevacs because he has a weak stomach. Wheezer denies that and blames his nose. They reach Doug a short time later only to find that he is stuck to the ice. They decide to use the warm coffee in Chopper’s thermos to attempt to free Doug from the ice. Doug goes into V-fib because the coffee increases his temperature too quickly. Hayley believes they need to defibrillate him.

Chopper takes over the compression as Hayley realizes Doug is in water so they’ll need to move him first. They manage to move him to the board before Hayley shocks him. He arrives at the hospital where Trevor (Patrick Kwok-Choon) takes over. Hayley receives a call from Dr. Allen who has an opening in the OR this week so he’d like to get her in for a mastectomy. Hayley admits that is a lot sooner than she was expecting, but Allen says they shouldn’t delay this. She makes an excuse to hang up. Tristan (Kheon Clarke) tells Nowak (Thomas Elms) to relax because he is ready to return. Nowak hopes Pierce (Jeff Teravainen) doesn’t ask too many questions before he leaves. Reese (Ryan Ali) tells Tristan that he knew he liked to use towels as bolsters for patients so he restocked for him. After Tristan thanks him, Reese admits he is hard not to notice. Nowak knocks on Pierce’s door, but he doesn’t seem to hear him.

Pierce gives him permission to return to work. Nowak goes to the locker room to tell Lexi (Mercedes Morris) and Tristan. He tells Lexi that she can’t ignore him since they’re going to be on the plane together for a while. Lexi reveals she switched shifts with Chopper because she is mad at Nowak for lying to her. Once Nowak’s pager goes off, he leaves. Tristan knows why Lexi is upset, but Nowak has been dealing with some heavy stuff recently. Lexi cares about him too, but Nowak crossed a line and Tristan let him because he is in love with him. Crystal (Morgan Holmstrom) finds that Jeremy (Braeden Clarke) is giving some stuff to the community. She tells him he can’t keep beating himself up. Crystal wants him to know that she got into med school so he doesn’t think she just disappeared this time. He tells her congratulation before she leaves. Tristan tells Chopper that Lexi thinks he is in love with Nowak.

Chopper seems to think they are too since they’re great together. Tristan has never done a relationship before or told anyone that. He isn’t sure he can give Nowak the L word if that is what he is expecting. Emma (Rebecca Kwan) tells them about Tricia who has colon cancer and needs to go to Winnipeg for chemotherapy. Chopper tells Emma that it is wait and see with Bodie’s baby. She asks about the chest tube patient and calls his work really impressive. Chopper thinks it was good practice for selection camp. He tells her he’ll leave in a couple of days before Crystal interrupts to see if they’re ready to go. Emma asks her why she didn’t say Chopper was leaving, but Crystal reminds her it isn’t a done deal yet. Emma doesn’t regret ending her engagement, but she hasn’t figured out what she wants yet. Crystal admits they sometimes don’t know what they want until it is gone. Madison (Emilia McCarthy) is told she won’t be able to hold the baby until the umbilical lines are removed.

Bodie (Aason Nadjiwon) is asked if he wants to hold the baby in the nest this time. Later, they try to find out what they want to make their baby. Bodie tells her she needs to eat so he’ll go get her something. When he steps out of the room, he receives a call from Captain Paul Slater from Air Canada because they want him to interview again. He is told to take some time to think about it, but not to take too long. They want him there by the end of the week. Constable Jennifer Lee (Rong Fu) meets with Crystal to tell her that Brad (Matthew Kevin Anderson) was released on bail this morning. His neighbors heard gunshots at his house half an hour ago. When a unit went out there, they saw blood on the carpet.

Jennifer thinks Jeremy may be involved so she sent someone to check his place in North House. Crystal is surprised to find Jeremy with Brad in the locker room. Brad tells them that his buddies weren’t happy that Jeremy didn’t have the money for the oxy they sent up. Jeremy insists he didn’t shoot Brad. Instead, his bosses did. Brad tells Crystal how it happened before Jeremy dragged him here. Crystal argues he needs to go to the hospital for imaging to rule out internal bleeding, but Brad isn’t willing to go to a hospital. If he gets caught and goes to jail, they’re going to think he snitched on them. This is nothing compared to what will happen to him if they think he snitched. She refuses to help him unless he agrees to go to the hospital. Brad warns her that Jennifer will think Jeremy shot him if he dies. If he doesn’t die and gets caught, he’ll tell the cops that Jeremy shot him.

Brad says it is his word against Jeremy’s. He asks Crystal if she is going to gamble that their justice system will believe a native man over a white man. Brad tries to force Crystal to take the bullet out right now. Tricia makes it to the hospital. Jennifer stops Hayley to tell her they’re looking for someone with a gunshot wound. When Crystal appears behind them, Hayley keeps Jennifer busy so Crystal can escape. Hayley catches up with Crystal to find out what is going on. Crystal doesn’t think she should get involved, but Hayley is eager to help. They return to Jeremy and Brad. Jeremy is told to keep watch while they remove the bullet. When he begins screaming, they agree to give Jeremy fentanyl for the pain. They pretend they gave him five times the dose and he could stop breathing any minute. Hayley questions why they should give him Naloxone when they don’t have enough up here.

Brad agrees to do whatever they want if they save him. He confesses while being recorded on a smartphone and admits Jeremy isn’t involved. Brad says his bosses shot him. Once he finishes, Crystal admits they only gave him Valium. They get him to the car so they can take him to the ER bay. Jeremy will get a burned phone and send the confession to Constable Lee. He believes he can get back to North House before anyone realizes he was here, but he nearly collapses. Crystal checks on him and finds out that he has been shot too. While she takes care of it, Jeremy wonders if he could’ve done more to stop that stuff from coming up there. Crystal tells him otherwise because the community loves him and he helps a lot of people. She admits she was hoping he’d tell her not to go when she told him she got into med school.

Jeremy tells her he is always proud of her even when he was giving her crap for leaving. He doesn’t want to be the reason she doesn’t go after this. Crystal calls him an idiot and tells him she loves him. When she takes him home, she gives him advice for caring for the wound. Then, she says Thompson General is a teaching hospital so they might let her do her rotations up here. He tells her to worry about that later before they kiss. Back at the hangar, Reese hits a shelf and causes it to fall on Pierce. Although Lexi yells at Pierce to warn him, he doesn’t seem to hear her. Pierce insists he is fine, but tells them to be careful since the debris could shift. When they begin coughing from the fumes, he asks them to evacuate. It is MEK and super toxic. Chopper rushes to get the universal spill kit. Tristan and Lexi work on getting Pierce out while Chopper tries to deal with the spill. Lexi says she tried to warn him. Pierce confesses that he didn’t hear her and his mom went deaf in her 50s.

He didn’t say anything because he thought he had more time and needed more time. Tristan worries he might have internal bleeding so they need to get him out immediately. Lexi uses a forklift to lift the shelf before Pierce is put on a board. Chopper checks on her. Bodie returns with food for Madison. She asks him why he is here. He doesn’t have to stay because Madison was prepared to raise him on her own. Bodie knows it’ll take her a long time to forgive him, but he wants to be a dad and with her. Madison believes he wants the baby but not that he wants her. She believes she deserves better than what he has given her. Malcolm arrives to check on Bodie in the hallway. Bodie tells him that he keeps screwing things up with Madison. Malcolm wants him to come to their feast at Deep Lake.

Bodie arrives with Malcolm who introduces him to his cousins, Charlie and Jordan, and his uncle Pete or Pebbles. Malcolm tells him that this is his family. Before they begin, Bodie steps outside and contemplates contacting the Air Canada rep. Malcolm comes out to tell him it is okay. Bodie asks why he is crying. Malcolm says the drum is the first song he ever heard. It is the sound of his mother’s heartbeat. Once Bodie goes back to the hospital, he learns that the umbilical lines were removed two hours ago. The nurse helps him hold the baby skin to skin. Emma lures Chopper outside where she has set up a romantic setting for them. She admits she wasn’t ready for what he wanted before, but she thinks she is now. Chopper thinks she is just upset that he might be leaving. He believes she likes having a plan that wanted him to be there waiting. If he leaves, she will no longer have a plan. Emma denies that because she really likes him.

Chopper doesn’t know why everyone acts like he isn’t coming back. He isn’t sure he’ll get the spot although he is excited about going to the camp. Emma came up here wanting to make money and bank vacation for a wedding. She has money and vacation now, but doesn’t know what to do with it. He doesn’t think she should force it and maybe let herself not know what she wants. After Tristan gives Nowak lunch and they kiss, Nowak leaves. Reese enters to ask Tristan about Pierce. Tristan insists it wasn’t his fault before he is told he was cool under pressure. Reese calls what he did pretty hot. Pierce tells Lexi he is expected to make a full recovery except for his hearing. He admits she was right that putting on the bars means something. You should put the safety of everyone else first and he failed. The problem with flying is that once you’re hooked, you can’t shake it. Sometimes you’re just not strong enough to step away. Crystal learns that Jeremy gave his truck to a friend since he wouldn’t need it for a while.

She goes inside and finds everything covered except for a copy of Treasure Island on the table. Doc (John Lowe) tells Hayley about Nora (Jennifer Dzialoszynski) and how it started with a toothache. Her dental infection has spread to her sinuses. Nora tells them she can’t stay gone for long because her mom is in a wheelchair and she cares for her. Once they get on the plane, Nora seems confused and starts fighting with Hayley. She tries to open the door. It continues until Nowak helps Hayley get control of her. They take her to Thompson where the police and an ambulance are waiting for her. Tristan runs over to check on Nowak who insists he is fine. Tristan tells him he loves him. Nowak says it back to him. At the hospital, Trevor tells them that she should make a full recovery although she let a simple infection get out of hand. The police want to know if Hayley wishes to press charges, but she says no since Nora has been through so much.

Once they’re alone, Hayley admits to Crystal that it has been a rough few days. She lost a patient, got attacked by a patient, and almost lost Madison and her baby. When she first came up here, she was running and pretending that everything was okay. Hayley tells her about the thing she has had hanging over her for months. Lexi checks on Nowak who admits it was intense, but he kept his head on and his crew is safe. He knows what it is like to be trapped in a plane with someone dangerous and unpredictable. He also realizes it was wrong to keep that secret. Lexi says there is a difference between him being wobbly and a patient trying to crash the plane. When Madison wakes up, she finds Bodie sitting with the baby. He tells her about AC calling and wanting to interview him again.

He turned it down because he is right where he needs to be. She deserves someone who can give her everything so he is sorry he couldn’t be that person. He wants to be a dad more than anything and suggests parenting together even if they’re not together. They agree to name the baby Joel after his mother. Nowak learns that Wheezer is the new Chief Pilot. Emma goes to the airport to board a plane to Fiji. Chopper goes to the space camp. Lexi goes to the restaurant and notices a little girl admiring her outfit. Bodie holds the baby and watches a plane through the window. Crystal goes with Hayley to the hospital for the operation.

SkyMed Review

The finale of SkyMed probably wasn’t as effective as the prior episode, but it still had some decent moments. A lot happened and potentially set up a second season although its future depends on how well this season does. Bodie decided to skip the Air Canada interview to stay with his baby and Madison even if they’re not in a relationship. Wheezer was promoted to Chief Pilot after Pierce was injured and had to reveal his hearing problems.

Crystal and Jeremy seemed to smooth things over, but it seems Jeremy has left town. Tristan and Nowak are likely in a full-scale relationship now. Hayley went in for her surgery only for the episode to end before we found out if it was successful. SkyMed often felt like it was creating problems out of the blue just to keep the story moving and it worked sometimes. It was slightly annoying at points too though. Pierce’s hearing problem and accident were a good example of this since there wasn’t any real build-up.

The relationships weren’t well developed sometimes, especially when the characters slept together after a few minutes of knowing one another. Others made more sense. Truthfully, SkyMed is a good guilty pleasure that probably shouldn’t be taken seriously. It is emotionally effective sometimes even if the character’s motives are often muddied. The series was better than some of the other similar shows on television right now, but this is a very cluttered genre making it difficult for any show to stand out.
