Another awards season is in the books and everyone, as expected, went la la for LA LA LAND. Until, they didn’t. In what will go down as one of, if not the, biggest blunder in Oscar history, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were apparently handed the wrong envelope and read LA LA LAND for the Best Picture winner until the ceremony producers stopped the acceptance speeches midway to reveal the mistake and award rightful winner, MOONLIGHT.
The film swept again regardless with Damien Chazelle Winning Best Director and Emma Stone winning Best Actress (it was this envelope that was handed over by mistake). The film also nabbed Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Production Design. MOONLIGHT saw further success by winning Best Adapted Screenplay and Mahershala Ali winning Best Supporting Actor.
Casey Affleck won Best Actor for MANCHESTER BY THE SEA which also won Best Original Screenplay and Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for FENCES. elsewhere, ZOOTROPOLIS won Best Animated Feature, O.J. MADE IN AMERICA won Best Documentary with THE SALESMAN winning Best Foreign Language Film.
In the technical awards FANTASTIC BEASTS won Best Costume Design with HACKSAW RIDGE winning Best FIlm Editing and Sound Mixing. SUICIDE SQUAD won for Best Make-up/Hair with ARRIVAL nabbing Best Sound Editing and THE JUNGLE BOOK winning for Best Visual Effects.
Finally, the Best Documentary Short went to THE WHITE HELMETS and the Best Animated Short award went to PIPER.
