Influencer

This 2022 thriller follows an influencer (Emily Tennant) who goes on holiday to Thailand and soon learns to live without her phone. Or food or water.

Influencer starts interestingly enough, initially centring on the social media addict before rolling the opening credits half an hour into the film, then switching focus to her new friend CW (Cassandra Naud). It looks like a clever riff on Main Character syndrome, but quickly abandons any element of social commentary and descends into an innocuous, inconsequential thriller.

It is comparable to Saltburn in that regard, alongside its uncertainty over whose side it’s on, as well as lacking any semblance of motivation for its (actual) main character. Naud gives an impressive performance considering how little she has to work with, but the character simply lacks the depth of Aubrey Plaza in Ingrid Goes West, the 2017 comedy that did this idea infinitely better when it still felt fresh.

This is a movie that follows trends instead of basic logic, which is a problem when there are no satirical, funny or scary moments to keep us subscribed to its incoherent timeline. For all its tropical locations and topical affectations, Influencer proves as uninspired as its title.
