‘Laura’ Movie Summary

The summary below contains spoilers.
Detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) of the NYPD investigates the murder of Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), a young and successful advertising executive. His investigation leads him to question various individuals in Laura’s life, including the charismatic newspaper columnist Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), Laura’s fiancé Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price), and her loyal housekeeper Bessie Clary (Dorothy Adams).

As McPherson learns more about Laura, his infatuation with her grows—to the point Lydecker accuses him of developing romantic feelings for the deceased. His investigation is thrown into chaos when the presumed dead Laura returns alive after a three-day getaway at her cottage and McPherson discovers that the murdered woman was actually one of Laura’s models, Diane Redfern, whom the killer mistook for Laura.

McPherson’s investigation intensifies as he uncovers evidence pointing towards Lydecker’s jealousy and manipulation, ultimately leading to the revelation that Lydecker orchestrated the murder. In a dramatic confrontation, McPherson confronts Lydecker and exposes his guilt.

The climax unfolds as Lydecker attempts to kill Laura, driven by his obsession with her. However, McPherson arrives to save Laura, resulting in Lydecker’s demise (presumably killed).

The film concludes with McPherson and Laura in each other’s arms for a happy ending.
