‘Scream VI’ Movie Summary

The summary below contains spoilers.
One year after the most recent serial killings in Woodsboro depicted in Scream (2022), a new serial killer(s) rises up in New York City. Laura Crane (Samara Weaving) is a Blackmore University professor who is waiting for a blind date in a restaurant when she receives a call from her would be suitor. Her date is having trouble finding the restaurant, so Laura goes outside to assist him. She walks into an empty alleyway nearby and is killed by her film student Jason Carvey (Tony Revolori) wearing a Ghostface costume.

After the murder, Jason returns to his apartment where he lives with his roommate Greg. Jason and Greg are fans of Ghostface and are planning on killing sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega), two of the survivors of the previous film, to finish the “movie” that Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid) and Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) were planning on making in the previous film. However, Jason finds his apartment empty and receives a call from a different Ghostface (voice of Roger L. Jackson), who has already killed Greg and kills Jason.

The film then cuts to Sam and Tara who are now living together in New York City with another roommate, Quinn Bailey (Liana Liberato). Sam and Tara have a strained relationship as Sam is overprotective for her younger sister. Tara, Quinn, and other Woodsboro survivors Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown) all attend nearby Blackmore University. At the same time, Sam has been attending counseling with her therapist Dr. Christopher Stone (Henry Czerny) to work with her issues of being the biological daughter of infamous murderer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), one of the original Ghostface killers. Sam is still dealing with the fallout of the most recent killings in Woodsboro due to an online conspiracy theory that states that she was the true mastermind for the crimes and not Richie and Amber.

When Jason and Greg’s bodies are found by police, Sam is called in for questioning by Quinn’s father, Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney). Bailey explains that Sam’s ID was found at the murder scene along with a Ghostface mask that was worn by Richie and Amber. On the way to the police station, Sam receives a call from Ghostface using Richie’s phone. When Sam becomes confrontational with the caller, she and Tara are attacked in a bodega by Ghostface. The killer murders several innocent bystanders and leaves behind another Ghostface mask worn by the killer in the 2011 Woodsboro killings depicted in Scream 4. Sam and Tara survive the attack.

Down at the police station, Sam and Tara are introduced to FBI special agent Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) who is assisting Bailey with his investigation. Kirby is a survivor of the 2011 Woodsboro murders in Scream 4 and has a special interest in Ghostface killers. Outside the police station, Sam and Tara encounter reporter Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) who is on the scene to report about the most recent killings. Sam and Tara are angry with Gale after she went back on her word not to write about the last killings in Woodsboro. So much so that Tara punches her in the face. Off the record, Gale informs the sisters that Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is aware of the new killings and has taken her family to go into hiding to protect them. Gale offers to help Sam and Tara, but they reject her offer out of resentment.

I got it wrong again. Fuck this franchise! Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown)

Not long after, Dr. Stone is murdered by Ghostface, who steals Sam’s therapy file and leaves behind a mask worn during the Hollywood killings in Scream 3. Film fan Mindy theorizes that the new killer is following the rules of film franchises, specifically the rule that anyone can die while the franchise will continue. Mindy also theorizes that Chad’s roommate, Ethan Landry (Jack Champion), is the killer, although he denies it.

Later that night, the gang is hanging out at Sam and Tara’s apartment. Sam’s boyfriend, Danny Brackett (Josh Segarra), who lives nearby sees Ghostface killing Quinn in her bedroom from his apartment window. Sam tries to warn everyone that Ghostface is in the apartment, but the killer attacks and everyone does a mad scramble to get away. Anika Kayoko (Devyn Nekoda), Mindy’s girlfriend, is killed in the attack. In the aftermath, a mask is discovered that was worn by the killers in the Windsor College killings as depicted in Scream 2. Bailey arrives to find his daughter dead. He is removed from the investigation, but vows to catch the killer nonetheless.

Bailey begins investigating the case, and Sam and Tara help him. The investigation leads to an abandoned theater where Jason and Greg were known to frequent that has a shrine to the prior Ghostface killers and the Stab movies that arose from them. Gale’s investigative reporting also leads her to the same theater. In the theater, they find many items, including the masks and knives, that were used in the previous murders.

Not long after, Ghostface calls Gale at her apartment and verbally antagonizes her about the death of her ex-husband, Dewey Riley (David Arquette). Eventually, Ghostface reveals himself and kills Gale’s current boyfriend and tries to kill Gale. Sam and Tara realize that Ghostface is going to attack Gale and arrive just in time to save her. Gale is taken to the hospital for severe injuries, but she ultimately survives.

The remaining survivors agree to work together to stop Ghostface, and they come up with a plan with Kirby to trap the killer in the theater. However, the group becomes separated from each other while trying to get on the subway. Mindy and Ethan are together, but Mindy is stabbed by a Ghostface on a subway filled with costumed people during Halloween. Mindy, once again, survives the attack. Sam, Tara, Kirby, and Chad make it to the theater. Once again, Sam finds herself haunted by the ghost of her father, who encourages her to take a knife and kill. Sam discovers that they are locked in the theater. Suddenly, two Ghostface killers appear and attack Chad, who is stabbed several times. Wayne arrives and tells Sam and Tara that Kirby is the killer and shoots her.

Wayne then reveals himself as a third Ghostface killer and the mastermind behind the entire plot. The other two Ghostface killers reveal themselves to be Ethan and Quinn, who is still alive. Bailey explains that Ethan and Quinn are his children, and that he is also the father of Richie Kirsch. Bailey explains that the entire plot was to get revenge on Sam for the brutal way that she killed Richie in the last film. The trio admits that they were responsible for the online rumor that Sam was the real killer in the last Woodsboro murders. Bailey tells Sam and Tara that they plan to kill the sisters and frame Sam for all the murders.

Sam and Tara begin to fight back against the family. Tara stabs Ethan, temporarily incapacitating him. Sam kills Quinn and knocks Bailey unconscious. When Bailey regains his senses, he begins hunting for Sam, who has donned her father’s original Ghostface costume. She taunts Bailey with a phone call using a voice changer before stabbing him several time until he is dead. Ethan then leaps out for a last attack, but he is stopped when Kirby smashes the television set that killed Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) in the original Scream film over his head, killing the last killer.

In the aftermath, Sam agrees to let Tara live her live more independently as she now understands that her sister can take care of herself. Tara looks to begin a relationship with Chad, who once again survived his attack. Tara also agrees to go to therapy to deal with some of her trauma, just as Sam has been trying to do. The film ends with Sam, Tara, and Danny walking off into the city while Chad, Mindy, and Kirby all head off to the hospital.
