Ron Howard On Willow 2 - No Green-Light Yet But Potential Welsh Location

Ron Howard Answers Our Questions About Willow 2

Warwick Davies Is Very Happy With The Sequel
Wales Being Considered For A Location
Sequel Not Green-Lit Yet

During a live Q&A with Ron Howard on Facebook I was lucky enough to get my question answered by the director about the current progress of Willow 2 and whether there's a chance we could see a return to Wales where the first movie was shot.

Ron Howard was answering questions on a Facebook live video chat for the Edinburgh International Film Festival's #EdFilmFestAtHome event.  Howard was promoting his latest documentary REBUILDING PARADISE about the destruction of the city of Paradise in the United States due to horrendous fires and how the community pulled together during these recent tragic events.  Rebuilding Paradise is sure to be a moving but essential watch.  We've added the trailer below.

I had to get a quick question in at the end of the chat about the potential sequel to the 1988 Lucasfilm produced Willow which was directed by Ron Howard and starred Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer.  Willow 2 is being made for Disney+ but since January we haven't heard much from the production.  My question was actually split into two and the first part was to ask what it was like when he shot the first movie in Wales, my home country.  Willow had major scenes shot in the Llanberis area of Snowdonia National Park. The second part of the question was about the sequel and whether a return to Wales is possible.  Ron concentrated on the part about the sequel and here's his response:

"Well, if I say anything too concrete it's gonna go viral because anytime I say anything about Willow, people take it all very seriously.  I will say that, let's see...what can I say?  It's still in development. It doesn't have a green light.  Warwick Davis is thrilled by it and if we are lucky enough for it to go, he would come back as Willow."

"We are far enough along that in a very tentative way, locations are beginning to be scouted, and we don't know where we're going to shoot, but we have gotten some research photos back from Wales.  It's nice to think about where our old knock bar was, and again no idea if we're gonna get to make the show but we're having a wonderful time developing the scripts under Jonathan Kasdan who is leading the charge."

So Willow 2 hasn't been green-lit yet but it's seems the wheels are in motion.  It would be nice to see the sequel being shot in Wales again and the return of Warwick Davis.  You can watch the full Q&A below.  Thank you to the Edinburgh Film Festival for making it possible to get my question answered by Ron Howard.

Rebuilding Paradise is a 2020 American documentary film directed and produced by Ron Howard. The film follows the rebuild of Paradise, California, following the 2018 California wildfires. It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2020.
