Beauty and the Beast
We all know the story: After her father goes missing, Belle journeys into the forest to Discover an enchanted castle filled with animate objects and a reclusive beast looking to break the spell by discovering true love.
Director Bill Condon finds the right balance between remaking and reimagining. Unable to outdo the animated version or the live musical, this redo finds its own footing by recreating the magic while it updates the story for modern audiences.
Life
After intercepting a damaged exploratory shuttle coming back from Mars, a group of scientists aboard the ISS (International Space Station) discover a new life form which could lead to an extinction-level event.
After a promising set-up (which is a carbon copy of Gravity) the film quickly devolves into a series of uninspired death sequences where the monster attacks, kills, and disappears; then rinse and repeat.
Good luck trying to follow Life’s character motivation or its basic story logic. Take my advice and watch Alien or The Thing instead.
Power Rangers
We already know the plot: A group of teens discovers ancient alien technology buried beneath their town that grants them access to a host of cheesy powers they must harness to stop an awakened evil.
As Hollywood continues to mine the depleted wells of 90s nostalgia, it was only time before someone made the inevitable Power Rangers reboot. This 2017 version, replete with call backs, updates, and nods to the original source material, tries to disguise its campy premise for much of its runtime, but then it goes completely off-the-rails insane for its titans’ showdown.
