Drew
Goddard’s “Cabin in the Woods” is a new take in the Horror genre’ that mixes
classic occult witchcraft and modern-day cutting-edge technology. It explores
the possibility when science finally catches up with myths, legends and
superstitions and attempts to bring the uncontrollable under control. The
result of course was disastrous, the Mayans beliefs seem to come true because
they believe that time is cyclical and therefore history is bound to repeat
itself no matter the choices we make.
The
story begins with five friends Marty (Fran Kranz), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Dana (Kristen Connolly) and Holden (Jesse Williams) preparing to visit Curt’s cousin’s cabin in the woods, where supposedly he got
an invitation from him a few weeks ago to go there on a weekend retreat. But
while it was never mentioned in the Movie, some of the scenes suggest that it
was a fake call from a secret yet powerful organization experimenting on people
randomly worldwide on how they will go through their maze of horror. The cabin
along with a portion of the forest surrounding it is probably just one of the
many elaborate observation platform designed by this shadow organization. It
has hidden cameras, chemical gases that can trigger a specific emotional
response making the subject extremely irrational even though he or she may
think and feel like they are in absolute control of the situation until it’s
too late. Secret crevices and artificial graves that houses monsters, zombies,
ghosts and other creatures of unspeakable horror. Invisible plasma shield that
will not allow even air to pass through, high explosives embedded in key areas
that can be set to explode to block the way out on any possible exits that the
victims may find.
The
victims almost have no way of escaping the trap that they were led into, but
every once in a while Fate intervenes and shatters everything in a foolproof
plan, and this time it did. It chose Dana to change the course of history and
cause everything to crumble down including probably the unprepared societies of
mankind that will awaken to a different kind of apocalypse. Marty became her
consort to help her get through the dangers that lie ahead until inevitably
they’ve reached the lair of the so called “ancient gods” who demanded Human
blood sacrifice and in exchange they will spare the Human Race from an ill fate
that had befallen other creatures that walked the Earth millions of years
before man did.
Basically
5 types of humans were needed to be sacrificed to the ancient ones in order to
prevent them from waking up and consuming the human race instead. A warrior who
was Curt, the whore who was Jules, the wise who was Holden, the fool who was
Marty and the virgin - Dana; the images carved on a solid granite slab depicts each of the five characters in the Film. This was according to “The Director” played by
actress Sigourney Weaver, where in a last desperate hope she tries to finish
the job that her two subordinate technicians, Sitterson (Richard Jenkins) and Hadley
(Bradley Whitford), failed to do. But her efforts proved to be useless as
apparently fate decided for the ancient ones to awaken after their long
slumber, although we will have to wait and see if that’s going to happen
because the movie did not fare well in the box office also.
It’s up to Lionsgate
to decide if they want a sequel for this film; however, in its defense it is a
good scary movie. Only there were times when all the blood and guts that’s
spilling is not as impressive because there was too much high-tech stuff in the
movie that would more or less break my concentration. I don’t know about you
but it did that to me. In any case I’ll give this film a 3.5 over 5 star rating
for being an almost nice film, but not close enough.
