The Legend Of The 7 Golden Vampires – Movie Review

A collaboration between Hammer films and the Shaw Brothers Studios? Truly something I never expected to see, yet somehow it is not surprising.

The eternal sleep of Dracula is interrupted by a Taoist monk who seeks his aid in revitalizing the 6 Golden Vampires after the death of their seventh member. Dracula accepts but on the terms that he steals his body and escapes.

About a hundred years later, professor Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) is doing a lecture on Chinese vampires at a Chunking university when he is approached by a young man called Hsi Ching who seeks his help. The man explains that his village has been terrorized by the seven golden vampires and seeks his help. The professor agrees and along with his son, Hsi Ching and his brothers set off for the village.

Upon first glance, the Movie seems to be a fresh breath of air in contrast to the usual style of production of both film studios. But to be fair it was not anything too out of the ordinary. To me it just felt like a typical Hammer film with a bit of kung fu splashed in. Unfortunately not the best from either sides was showcased in it. The fighting and acting were pretty average, the dialogue barely passable and the horror aspect was hardly noticeable, although there were a couple of scenes that stood out. Still those couple of scenes and Cushing himself could not make this a good movie. It was entertaining, that is for sure but it was a movie that I will just forget after a short while.

I know that I should not have expected anything oscar worthy from this movie coming in but I really thought it would have been a cult classic and after watching it I understood why I never heard about it until recently. Still, if you are a fan of both studios it is worth a watch, perhaps you will enjoy it more than I did.

Final verdict: 6/10
