Society (1989) – Movie Review

We live in a society

Well since everyone is stuck at home, I started browsing TubiTV again to try and find another gem on there. So I came across this. This Movie is somewhat known in the horror genre, I have seen memes about it and people talking about it a few times now so it is not a very unknown movie but since I haven’t seen it I decided to check it out.

Bill Whitney is a young teenage boy that seems to have it all. He is popular, athletic, he has a gorgeous girlfriend and is a part of a wealthy Family. However, he can not shake off the feeling of alienation. He feels like he just does not belong in his family and that maybe he was adopted.

At times it also feels like the whole world is against him. On top of that, strange and unexplained things start Happening around him. At first, he thinks he is paranoid, maybe the stress is getting to him, but when he gets a creepy recording of his family, things start to take a dark turn.

This movie was interesting. At first, it comes off as a cheesy 80s teen slasher flick, and even though it has some of those elements but while you watch it you begin to notice that there is something else happening. Something behind the curtains. It puts you in the position of the main character where you don’t know what is happening, what is real and even who is real. It slowly turns into a symbolic story that shows how the wealthy act and treat people who they think are lower than them in the darkest and most grotesque way you can imagine.

I really enjoyed this film. It had the perfect amount of humor and cheesiness, serious and dark undertones and some social criticism. It is not perfect by any means, some of the acting slacks off at parts (but then again in the context of the movie it might be intentional) and some parts of the movie felt like they were trying too hard in them but all in all, it was a lot of fun, especially the ending which was something I never expected to see. Body horror at its finest. I can’t even try to describe it. It’s a sight you have to see with your own eyes to believe.

And even if it’s over the top and insane, you can’t help but think that similar things like this do happen in the world. There have been tons of stories and conspiracies on things like this happening (I know that without spoiling that I can’t really say what I mean but that’s why I mentioned “Eyes wide shut” to give you at least some context) so it really does make you think “What kind of games are the ultra-rich playing with us regular folk and what do they do behind closed doors?”

Final verdict: 7/10
