AHS: Apocalypse – episode 1

AHS: Apocalypse – Episode 1

So I finally had some free time and got down to actually watch something new and what better to watch than the start of the new season of American Horror Story.

With the last season being what it was (I’m not even from the US and I’m not that much into politics but I only managed to watch one episode from it) I have high hopes that they will greatly improve with this season. I seem to have a love hate relationship with the show with loving some of the seasons while barely finishing others.

This season we start off with a few families and characters living out their normal lives until everyone gets a message on their phone saying that there are missiles incoming. We also see on the news that Hong Kong and other major cities have all been hit and wiped out as world war 3 starts. People start panicking and try to find a way to survive, and some just end up killing themselves to avoid the missiles.

Our main cast trough a series of events finds themselves into Outpost 3. One of the several fallout shelters designed to host the remaining human population. Some were found trough their genetics and were deemed to be ideal candidates while others bought their way trough their wealth. However as you would imagine things are not going to be all sunshine and rainbows. The “leader” of the outpost Ms. Wilhemina Venable (Sarah Paulson) seems to be doing something odd in the outpost and not following the orders of “The collective” (a secret organisation made out of the most brilliant minds in the world) and one of the main characters gets a warning on his mirror by an unknown entity. We also find out that 3 outposts have been wiped out and that this fallout will probably suffer the same fate. So in the final act of the episode we meet Michael Langdon (played by Cody Fern) who is the Anti-Christ (a character from the first season). He visits the outpost in order to pick the worthy people and transport them to a new facility where they will be safe.

The episode opened with a bang, dipping into existential horror as we see thousands of people try to cope with the end of life as we know it. As we progressed trough the episode (for me at least) the excitement went down. There were a few very corny parts and a few directions that they took which I thought were a bad choice but it is still the first episode so I have my hopes up. The returning cast is always on point. The music and cinematography are as expected decent and I’m looking forward to see how they will continue with the season. We have still not been introduced to much of the cast from Murder house and Coven and we don’t know how they will be added into the show. It will be a hard task. With all that the first episode unraveled adding more and more characters and subplots might only ruin the season but there is a small chance that it will improve it too. Maybe the witches of the third season will be there to stop the Anti-Christ and the end of times. And from the trailer we know that the man in the latex suit will be in this season as well. All in all it hit a few bumps on the road but it was a decent start of a season.

Final verdict: 7/10

What were your thoughts on it?
