Oh boy, this was an interesting experience. When you usually think of western, horror is usually not a genre that you associate with it so I was a bit skeptical before watching this but so many people praised it that I was too curious not to.

Bone Tomahawk was written and directed by S. Craig Zahler, produced by Jack Heller and Dallas Sonnier and stars  Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, Lili Simmons, David Arquette, Sid Haig and Sean Young.

A local sheriff is alerted by his deputy that a person that was acting weird out of town and was burying something in the dirt just came into town. The sheriff goes to investigate and in an alteration ends up shooting the drifter in the leg. In the jail cell the wife of the town doctor is called to aid him. During that night a murder occurs and both the doctor’s wife and the drifter are gone. They soon find out that they were kidnapped by a tribe of cave dwelling savage cannibals. Convinced that the tribe is responsible for the disappearances he gets together a search party of him and three other people.

If you would look up the definition of a slow burner Bone tomahawk would probably come up. It is a very slow burn but the final act is quite the viewing. It is one of the films that handles it’s gore very well which can be rare these days. I really loved the casting for the film. Each actor seemed to match their role perfectly. My favorite thing about the film was definitely the excellent cinematography and great dialogue.

The movie has everything it needs to become a fantastic film and I really wanted to love it. Don’t get me wrong it’s very enjoyable and I love slow burners but it just felt too long at some parts. I think that it could have been done better but all in all it’s still worth a watch. Keep in mind though if you go looking for your typical action packed western this is not for you.
