Santa Clarita Diet – season 1 review

Santa Clarita Diet – Season 1 Review

It’s been a very long time since I binge watched anything so I decided to take a look at a horror comedy show that I came across not to long ago.

I saw the trailer on YouTube and was really confused. I had no clue what type of show they were trying to make and the comedy seemed a bit odd. Not in a bad way though. It managed to intrigue me enough to give it a watch. And it’s safe to say that I loved it. I binge watched the entire season in one sitting.

Santa Clarita Diet tells the story of a family of realtors. The father Joel (played by Timothy Olyphant), the mother Julia (played by Drew Barrymore) and the daughter Abby (played by Liv Hewson). One day Julia starts to feel very ill and begins to vomit uncontrollably. After that she starts to feel very unusual. She starts to examine herself and discovers that she is no longer breathing and feels no pain. Troubled by the state of her mother, Abby decides to bring their neighbor called Eric (played by Skyler Gisondo) who confirms that she is in fact dead and undead as he puts it.

The problem arises when Julia begins to show aggression and starts to crave human flesh. They start struggling with her husband to find a way as a family to cure his wife while in the same time finding some sort of way of feeding her and spoiler alert there is a lot of killing. Julia and Joel transform from two normal and boring realtors to calm and unhinged serial killers.

I was really surprised from this show. It is hilarious, gory and insanely entertaining. Although from watching it I realized it might not be for everyone. Possibly my favorite aspect from the show was the chemistry that the cast has. It’s just hilarious to watch them all interact. Joel is by far my favorite character. He gives it his all to help his wife in any way possible which is quite hard to do considering his wife is a man eating zombie. I never knew Timothy as an actor before but I will be looking more into his work. He does not outshine any of the cast though which I love. Every character adds his own flavor to the show. There is never a dull moment in each of the episodes. They manage to make the plot just as good as the comedy and gore.

You can find the show on Netflix. It currently has two seasons out.

Final verdict: 8.5/10
