Stoping Spies From Exploiting Your Video Conferences

The entire world seems to be doing more via video Conference, for work, play, education and socializing.

The bad guys know that too, and have ramped up their attempts to exploit our video systems (see Common Threats To Video Conferencing Systems).

Here is a list of best practices to consider for your use of video conferencing systems. They are somewhat generic, but still relevant. Tailor these to your own system of course.

  1. Remember to add a password to every conference. This is perhaps the most important step you can take to mitigate risk. Passwords will reduce the risk of uninvited guests dropping in on your meetings.
  2. Verify all attendees: Be sure you know who you expect in the session and confirm they are the ones who are in.
  3. Be very careful with meeting links: Be sure to check that the invitation goes to a valid conference system site.
  4. Patching: Remember to not only keep your operating systems patched, but you video teleconferencing software.
  5. Never mention anything really sensitive. There are just too many threats to the privacy of these systems.
