Little is known about the actor's religion. However, according to various sources, he comes from an Irish Catholic family. This might suggest he holds some Catholic beliefs but its uncertain if he is still practicing today.

Since Butler is from Scotland, he is not a part of the American political system. He has made a comment about the American justice system and compares it with that of Scotland. He seems to focus more on acting and his career than getting involved in politics. He has been a supporter of the charity Mary's Meals since 2010. 

Butler is said to be dating Morgan Brown. There is so much of information about the two spending time together. They have been spotted swimming, shopping and enjoying boat rides together. 

Butler spends his time skiing, water skiing, horseback riding and playing football. He played a charity match for Celtic F.C in 2011. He has supported the club ever since he was a child. Butler is also an excellent singer. 

He did not see his father from the age of 2 until he turned 16 years old.

He sang in a rock band whilst training to be a lawyer.

His favourite actors are Christian Bale and Gary Oldman.
