The Rescue – Bobby, Athena, Hen, Buck, Chim, Lola, Norman, Maddie

In the end, you saw Athena and Bobby in therapy, and you know they made it out alive. However, the man Lola was sleeping with did not, nor a member of the crew helping Bobby, Athena, and others escape.

But, thanks to Hen’s stubbornness, Maddie’s connections, and, of course, Buck, Chim, and Eddie, all ends well and, to put some icing on top, despite the lies required to get a helicopter, no one gets fired. In fact, many believe the chief may get a rather nice boost from Hen’s unsanctioned rescue mission.

Highlights

The Intensity Of Norman Being Lowered In The Beginning

For a few minutes, you are transported to when “9-1-1” didn’t trap itself in a cycle of having to escalate every season with a major disaster that becomes a footnote. Norman is on the ceiling, which was the floor, staring down at a man who died from falling like he very well could. All the while, a bunch of rope is tied in hopes that it is strong enough to hold the table, Norman, and Bobby, and the music is pushing the idea something could go wrong.

Now, as time goes on, you know it won’t because none of these shows present real and lasting danger. However, just being able to, even momentarily, suspend disbelief was a surprise and welcomed. I’d dare say it even made me nostalgic for when I knew “9-1-1” cared about making threats to its characters’ lives seem real.

Low Points

Tuning Out As The Rescue Continued

The season began by making it clear that Athena and Bobby had survived, and there wasn’t a hint that someone could die during the rescue. Never mind, unlike many other long-running shows, like “The Good Doctor,” “9-1-1” has yet to kill off a series regular who has had well-done stories or could claim fan investment.

So, with that in mind, paired with guest stars who could, like Lola and Norman, return, even if you are a bit indifferent, eventually there was no need to pay attention. After all, even in terms of Hen and the others getting in trouble for having false documents and using a helicopter without permission, what trouble would that have really caused?

When Buck can go through all he did against the 118, and he and Chim can go through multiple events that should have ended their career, it’s hard to sustain the belief that something could happen when you’ve been shown repeatedly that no matter the event, no matter the injury, or if someone like Buck sues and ruffles feathers, all will be reset like nothing happened and the only proof something did, is the occasional mention of it.
