Stephen Colbert did not back down Wednesday night amid fierce backlash that was unleashed against the late night comic after he went on a lengthy tirade against President Trump.

“I had a few choice insults for the president,” Colbert said on “The Late Show” about his Monday night rant, according to a transcript provided to The Post.

“I don’t regret that. He, I believe, can take care of himself. I have jokes; he has the launch codes. So, it’s a fair fight.”

Colbert did say, however, that he would change a few words which were “cruder than they needed to be.”

He was apparently referencing a joke about Trump’s mouth serving as a “co-k holster” for Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.

“I’m not going to repeat the phrase, but I just want to say for the record, life is short, and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero,” Colbert noted.

“I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that. Nothing else. But, that.”

The joke was labeled homophobic by some and a #FireColbert hashtag started trending online.

The latest feud between Trump and Colbert was sparked by dust-up recent between Trump and CBS reporter John Dickerson.

Trump abruptly ended their interview when Dickerson, the moderator of “Face the Nation,” repeatedly pressed him on his unverified claim that President Obama “wiretapped” Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential election.

Colbert said he was just defending his pal.

“I was a little upset at Donald Trump for insulting a friend of mine,” Colbert joked on Wednesday.
