How Do You Shoot With A Softbox?

I’ve been asked quite a few times how I shoot with the softbox and what the setup is. I thought it would be a good idea to put together an explanation of how I do it, as well as a few examples of what I’ve been shooting over the last few months.

Description:How To Shoot With A SoftboxI’ll start with some photos of the setup. This is my favorite box, it is the Westcott Apollo softbox. It’s a 42″ octagonal softbox with a diffuser and removable front grid for more control (you can purchase this one here).

Setup:You have to set up your light just outside the frame, so you may have to move around to get it where you want it. When deciding where to put the light, think about where you want your subject lit and how much light you want on them if they are in front or behind your background (which is my preference).

I tend to light my subjects from slightly above and in front, behind or off to one side depending on the situation. I don’t ever really put them behind me because that limits my ability to adjust their position and may cause them to be out of focus since I’m shooting at f/11.

Foam Core Material

The first thing you should look at is the foam core material of the box itself. Foam core is basically a piece of white Styrofoam that is covered in black paper. When you are looking at diffusers, you will find this material inside of them, as well as on the outside.

The outside foam core helps to keep the light from bouncing off of the inside material and sending unwanted light out the back of your soft box. This can cause your background to become overexposed in the photo that you take. If you look at a soft box and see black foam core on both sides, it will diffuse light
