Paranormal Activity (2007)

Paranormal Activity, originally titled Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, is a 2007 supernatural horror film[2] directed by Oren Peli. The film was written by James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Jason Pagan, produced by Jason Blum and Steven Schneider, and stars Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat.

The plot follows a young couple who is haunted by a supernatural presence in their home. They begin to capture “ghost” activity on camera for scientific study.

The original idea for the film started as being independent but was later bought by Paramount Pictures. After making The Silent House (2010), Peli decided to make a more mainstream horror film with this film financed by Alcon Entertainment.

Filming began in June 2008 and concluded in July. It was filmed in Santa Clarita, California using natural light along with computer-generated effects.

Upon release, the film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a financial success, making $193 million against a production budget of $15,000.[3] A prequel titled Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) was released on October 22, 2010 while a sequel titled Paranormal Activity 3 (2011) was released on October 26, 2011.

A spin-off titled Paranormal Activity: The MarkThe old man and woman are the grandparents of Katie, a young woman who has just moved in with her boyfriend and his daughter after breaking up with her cheating ex-boyfriend Mike.They tell Katie that they had previously lived there with their son, who died in a car crash years ago.

Katie spots a photo of the man and recognizes him as her boyfriend’s dead father, but when she confronts him about it, he denies it and becomes irritated by her accusation.Travis later hears banging on the walls and doors at night.

He investigates one night, and discovers what appears to be a small child, crouched on all fours, crawling around on the ceiling. Travis follows the figure around the house while taking pictures of it with his digital camera until he loses sight of it.

He then hears a noise downstairs and finds a young girl in the kitchen, who runs away from him. When Travis checks outside, he sees that there is no child anywhere on the property.

Travis shows Kristi some pictures he took earlier that day and she recognizes the girl as “Isabel,” an imaginary friend that her daughter Sammy used to play with.Travis decides to set up security cameras around the house to monitor what happens during the night.

Creep (2014)

A video store clerk becomes convinced that a man who visits him is a serial killer.Description: This “thriller” is really more of a dark comedy, but it’s one of the creepiest films I’ve ever seen.

The premise is simple: A guy gets a job at a video store, and soon enough he finds out that his most frequent customer is an infamous serial killer. For some reason, he can’t bring himself to turn him in, so he follows him around at night as he commits crimes.

Description:The film demonstrates an unnerving ability to build suspense and discomfort with minimal effort and no special effects. The camera work is simple, there are no huge plot twists, and yet the whole thing feels like your skin is crawling.

The final scene had me literally gasping out loud. If you’re looking for something to give you nightmares, look no further.

In spite of its creepy nature (or maybe because of it), this movie has developed quite a cult following among horror fans. It’s been called deeply “disturbing,” “brilliant,” and even “genius.”

It’s not hard to see why. Creep definitely isn’t for everyone, but if you’re into horror films or just want something unusual to watch”Creep” is the song of a man who is not a creep, but rather someone that has no control over the fact that women find him attractive.

Picture the scene – you are on a night out with your friends, having drinks in a bar. You have been there for about an hour and have had a great time chatting to everyone and being introduced to lots of new people.

You’re feeling confident and like you’re finally fitting in.After about an hour of drinking, you notice this girl at the bar who has been watching you all night.

You’re not normally one to approach someone in a bar but something about her makes you go over and say hello. She smiles back at you and before you know it, you’re both having a great conversation together.

You tell her how beautiful she looks tonight and she thinks that is so sweet. You’ve got her laughing, smiling and at this point, she’s really enjoying your company.

A couple of hours later, after more drinks and flirting, she walks out of the bar with you and goes back to your place with you.She’s still really enjoying your company but within 10 minutes of getting back to your place, she tells you how much she loves your accent or hair or eyes or whatever

Hush (2016)

Hush is a 2016 American psychological horror film written and directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Kate Siegel as a deaf writer who is terrorized by a masked killer.*Synopsis*On Halloween night, Maddie Young is driving to her parents’ house in the woods with her boyfriend John after a Halloween party.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 90% based on 93 reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “Hush offers another strong — though slightly less effective — entry in director Mike Flanagan’s ongoing collaboration with actor Kate Siegel.”

On Metacritic, it has a score ofThe film is an adaptation of the eponymous short film from a few years ago. The short film was written and directed by Mike Flanagan and starred Kate Siegel as Maddie Young.

It went on to win multiple awards but there was no way a full-length feature film could stay true to the original while expanding upon it.The easiest thing to say is that the full-length movie Hush takes a different direction than the original short film, which is something that I think has been mentioned in almost every review I have read.

Hush (2016) takes some of the same ideas and expands upon them, coming up with a very different movie than the one we saw so many years ago in Hush (short).Hush (short) is essentially a revenge story. Maddie Young is attacked in her home by someone who broke into her house, knocking her unconscious and binding her with tape before laying down beside her bed and waiting for her to wake up.

She has no idea who he could be or why he is doing this to her, but she knows she can’t let him know she’s awake or he might kill her. She waits patiently for him to fall asleep before making a plan to get out of this situation alive.

The Babadook (2014)

The Babadook is a 2014 Australian/Canadian/French psychological horror film written and directed by Jennifer Kent in her directorial debut, and produced by Kristina Ceyton and Kristian Molière. The Babadook began as a short film titled Monster, which was shot in June 2011 and premiered at the 2012 Melbourne International Film Festival.

The Babadook was developed from an idea Kent had for a short film about a woman who finds a monster in her home. She began working on the concept after deciding to develop it into feature-length format, hiring Sam Friez to co-write the screenplay and production design, Dan Stevens to star as the eponymous monster, Essie Davis as Amelia and Noah Wiseman as Samuel, based on Kent’s casting choices for the 2011 short.

The Babadook was filmed over three weeks in September 2013 in Sydney and Hamilton Hill, with cinematography by Ben Nott. The Babadook was released in Australian theaters on 29 November 2014, beginning a limited release before beginning a wide release on 26 January 2015.

The film received positive reviews from critics; praise went towards its atmosphere, direction, screenplay and performances (particularly by Wiseman), with many calling it one of the best horror films of 2014. It is a psychological horror film about a single mother, Amelia (Essie Davis), who is trying to cope with her son’s fear of a monster in their house, known as the Babadook. She also must deal with her son’s emotional problems and husband’s death.

The Babadook was met with widespread acclaim by critics. Film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 89% of critics gave the film a favourable review, based on 116 reviews, with an average rating of 7.6/10 and the critical consensus: “Led by an outstanding performance from Essie Davis,The Babadook is a chilling and thought-provoking look at the monsters that haunt us both inside and out.”

On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film holds an average score of 77 based on 33 reviews, indicating “generally favorable reviews”.

The Lazarus Effect (2015)

In the lab of a prestigious medical university, a team of scientists is experimenting with life after death. When one of the scientists suddenly and mysteriously dies, the research is sealed off, and the other scientists must continue in secret to find out what really happened.

Before long, they start to experience strange and terrifying things themselves, and realize that their dangerous experiment has unleashed an evil force on the world. The scientists must now find a way to protect themselves from this force in order to finish their work…before it destroys them all.

Description:A group of scientists try to harness what happens when we die. They soon learn that if you don’t make it past death then something else will.

There is a new trend out there, which has gained a lot of popularity lately, and it is called the Lazarus Effect. It is named after a case where Jesus Christ resurrected a young man that had been dead for several days.

The movie is based on this story and the events are happening in a university research center. In this research center researchers are working on a formula that can resurrect the dead and they succeed on that goal too with some unexpected consequences.

A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place is a 2018 American post-apocalyptic horror film directed by John Krasinski, who stars alongside real-life wife Emily Blunt. The screenplay was written by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck and Krasinski, with a story by Woods and Beck.

Tense, smart and terrifyingly plausible, it’s one of the year’s scariest films — though not one for the faint hearted.The plot concerns a family in rural America where most of the population has been wiped out by unknown creatures that are drawn to sound.

The surviving humans communicate silently.The film also stars Noah Jupe, Millicent Simmonds and Cade Woodward as Krasinski’s on-screen children, whose performances are understated yet moving.

It’s a high concept premise but it works thanks to Krasinski’s direction which is tight and focused and Blunt’s strong central performance as the mother trying to keep her family together in increasingly desperate times.There are moments of real humour too (the youngest child does learn to speak!) and some genuinely touching moments involving the kids that will have you reaching for tissues.

Overall this is a beautifully made film with an interesting conceit that is well worth seeing on the big screen.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

The Blair Witch Project (1999) is not a movie, but it is a work of art. The film has the most famous line in the history of documentaries: “I didn’t want to go back in there, but my friends pushed me.”

This line has been endlessly parodied by television shows and YouTube videos. It also was a huge box office success when it came out in 1999.

The Blair Witch Project was not originally intended to be a documentary. It began as a horror film about three college students who went into the woods to make a documentary about the Blair Witch.

They filmed everything on their camcorder and then disappeared.The footage was found several weeks later and became a documentary itself, telling the story of the missing students.

It is an unsolved mystery whether this movie is real or fake, but I believe that it is 100% real and that they died while making this movie. The cameraman even says to his friends, “I’m not going any further.”

He also warns them that they are going into dangerous territory; however, they do not listen to him and continue on their journey into the woods until something happens to them that we will never know about.

Hell Fest (2018)

“Hell Fest” is the kind of film that you can talk about for hours after seeing. It’s a really fun time at the movies, but it also has quite a bit of depth to it.

It’s such a rich, layered character study that I feel like most people won’t be expecting.And I’m not even talking about the characters in the movie.

I’m talking about the filmmaker and the process that he went through in order to make it all happen.

The story takes place on Halloween weekend, so it’s basically just an excuse to get some killer death scenes on screen (and they do not disappoint). But there’s still plenty of stuff going on that makes this feel so much more than another found-footage movie.

There are multiple layers to it, which are all very well done.There’s a real sense of urgency and tension throughout most of the running time and there are some very cool twists along the way.

And yet, none of those twists are cheap or unearned. Even though I did see one coming, I was still satisfied with how things played out because everything was dealt with appropriately and made sense.:)

The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring is a very good, scary movie with a very good cast. It is not, however, a very original movie, and if you’ve seen enough horror films of late you will probably go in knowing exactly what’s going to happen.

The story centers on Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), real-life paranormal investigators who have been called in to deal with an evil presence in a Rhode Island farmhouse. The Perrons (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor) have moved into the house with their five daughters, but they’re finding it hard to settle down because they keep seeing all manner of odd things,including heads floating around the house, beds shaking violently, and other materializations that are both creepy and physically dangerous.

When the Perrons call in the Warrens, they find that there is something truly evil lurking within the walls of this house — so evil that it takes more than just these two paranormal experts to get rid of it.The acting is excellent, particularly from Wilson and Farmiga.

They’re both on screen almost constantly throughout the film, although we also get some really good work from young Mackenzie Foy as one of the Perron girls. Indeed most of the acting is solid across the board.

Dead Silence (2007)

The legendary Mary Shaw has been murdered and her spirit haunts the small town of Ravens Fair. Her ghost can be seen if you look into a mirror in a dark room, but only at midnight on the 13th day after her death.

When one person in the town accidentally sees Mary, he is killed by an unseen force.Mary’s daughter, Jamie, comes to town to investigate her mother’s murder, and she is haunted by the same evil force.

Jamie teams up with local sheriff Rachel McAllister to uncover the truth behind her mother’s murder. They discover that Mary was involved with a secret organization called The Lottery and learn that they must destroy all the mirrors in town if they are to stop the evil force and save Ravens Fair from certain doom.

Dead Silence is a 2007 American horror film directed by James Wan and co-written with Leigh Whannell, creator of Saw (2004). The film stars Ryan Kwanten, Amber Valletta, Donnie Wahlberg, and Jamie Ashen.

This was the second collaboration between Wahlberg and Ashen after they co-starred in the 2002 action film Max.Tobin Bell also appears in this film as a priest character similar to his Saw character, John Kramer.

The plot revolves around a man who seeks out information about his wife’s mysterious death and has to protect his daughter from a malevolent supernatural force. Filming took place in October 2006 in Toronto and was released in April 2007 to negative reviews from critics.

The film grossed $36 million on an estimated budget of $20 million.

Sinister (2012)

The film was released on October 5, 2012. Film reviewer Mike McGranahan of AintItCoolNews.com gave Sinister a positive review, praising the film’s atmosphere, effects and direction by Scott Derrickson.

He also commented positively on Ciarán Hinds’ performance as the villain.[25]

Film critic James Berardinelli of ReelViews gave Sinister 2.5 out of 4 stars, writing that “Sinister doesn’t break any new ground for the horror genre, but it does what it does very well”. He also wrote that “the pacing isn’t always ideal”, but that “the performances are acceptable and there are a few chills here and there”.

[26] Film critic James Rocchi of Moviefone gave the film 3 stars out of 5, writing that “Sinister is not a scary movie” and that “[t]he story is too familiar, and the characters are too one-dimensional”. However, he also wrote that the film had “a welcome creepiness to it” and that “[t]he scares don’t pop up on cue, which gives this haunted house flick more of an organic feel than most”, while also commenting positively on the film’s atmosphere.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

In the follow-up to the 2010 hit horror movie Insidious, psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) is back to help the Lambert family flee from the demon that they unwittingly brought into their home. The only problem is, it has followed them into their new house and will stop at nothing until it possesses young teenager Quinn (Stefanie Scott).

Although her parents try their hardest to rid her of this evil spirit, it’s not until Elise intervenes that Quinn seems to have a chance at living a normal life.

Insidious: Chapter 2 was written by Leigh Whannell, who also co-wrote the original film with director James Wan. Both are present for this sequel as well but in much smaller roles than we’re used to seeing them in.

Instead, Chapter 2 focuses on Elise and Quinn and how they must battle the demon. And what a battle it is! You’ll be on the edge of your seat for nearly the entire duration of this movie as you watch Quinn fight for her very soul and Elise trying to save her.

Chapter 2 expands upon the story of its predecessor by introducing more characters with psychic abilities like mediums and clairvoyants. We get to see these people more in depth than before as they’re all being haunted byWhile in the process of making a Ouija board, Kaylie (Wright) and Emily (Rose Byrne) are visited by demons from the spirit world.

Description:The second chapter in the frightening horror series picks up immediately following the events in Insidious, and follows the young psychic woman who has opened her own parapsychology business when she realizes that she’s being haunted by spirits from another realm. The ghost targets have increased as well as their numbers and an even deadlier entity is out to capture and possibly kill her before she can come between him and his nefarious plans to wreak havoc on the human race.

Description:Anchored by an outstanding performance by Patrick Wilson, this sequel to “Insidious” finds frequent director James Wan building upon his impressive track record of delivering top-notch scares. The film is more polished than its predecessor, but much like Wan’s “Saw,” it balances its elaborate scares with a surprising amount of emotion.

Although Wan makes a few missteps along the way, “Chapter 2” boasts enough chilling moments to make it one of the better horror sequels of recent memory.

Alone (2007)

Alone is a 2007 Norwegian film directed and co-written by Johannes Nyholm. It is based on the short story “Alone” by Kristine Nøkleberg.

The main character, Isak, lives with his brother and sister-in-law after the death of their parents and overprotective sister. He develops an obsession with a young girl staying in the same hotel as they are in while on vacation in Italy.

Tilda Swinton plays the role of Isak’s sister, who has a strange obsession with her dead husband and has forbidden Isak to go outside without her. She is always watching him, so he feels suffocated by her.

The young girl’s name was never mentioned in the movie, but it was written in the credits as “Anna”. Her character was played by German actor Mia Jankovic.

When Isak turns sixteen years old, his father’s brother comes to visit from Italy.His Uncle Matteo (played by Stellan Skarsgård) teaches him how to make ice cream with an old fashioned ice cream maker that Isak uses to impress his friends at school when he returns home for summer break.

The Uncle also takes him to buy a motorcycle that he wants to ride back home.The film focuses on the search of a young man, Olaf, who is looking for his sister, who he believes was killed by a bear while they were on holiday in the mountains.

The film is based on Glaswegian John Buchan’s novel of the same title.The film is narrated by Olaf as he recalls events that happened two years earlier.

He and his sister Ingrid (Sophie Lau) are on holiday in Norway visiting their uncle and a friend, Knut (Steinar Sagen).They witness a group of teenagers camping nearby throwing rocks at a mother bear and cubs.

One of the teenagers’ dogs runs off into the woods and is killed by the bear.The next day, Olaf goes swimming in a lake with Knut’s son Eirik (Kristofer Hivju).

While swimming,Olaf notices that Eirik has an injury from being bitten by a dog, most likely one of the same dogs which had been killed by the bear.Ingrid returns to Oslo to attend her university classes and meets her boyfriend Thomas (Kristoffer Joner).

She invites him to join them at the cabin for the weekend.

Rec (2007)

This is the most beautiful, yet terrible movie I have ever seen. It is hard to imagine a film more suited for the horror genre, yet I can’t think of a single horror movie that’s as good as this one.

Terrifying, but also hilarious. The acting by the main protagonist is so over-the-top it’s hilarious (and he’s a very handsome man too).

The effects are excellent and the shots are nicely-composed. The story is perfect and very interesting.

The atmosphere, the tension, and the music all work together to create a very frightening experience. Don’t watch this alone. And if you do, make sure you watch it during daytime.

And don’t watch it if you’re home alone at night.

This film takes what would be an average zombie flick and turns it into something special and unique… which is especially impressive considering there are hundreds of zombie movies out there already.The cinematography, acting and plot elements in Rec are all superb; however,I was disappointed by its pace until about halfway through (which is easily forgivable given that this movie has nearly 90 minutes of running time).

“Rec” is a simple and effective movie that goes out to prove that the most terrifying things are happening behind the closed doors of our houses and our minds.The first time I watched “Rec”, I was surprised by how literally true this saying is.

In this film, a TV reporter named Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) is sent to the apartment of a woman who, according to neighbors, hasn’t been seen for days. When she gets there, she finds two people sleeping in the living room.

The woman’s husband, Peter (David Verdaguer), and his sister-in-law, Ana (Manuela Velasco). Apparently, they are waiting for their wife and sister to come back from her nightly jog.

Angela decides to stick around and investigate what happened to the missing woman. For one thing, no one seems particularly worried about her disappearance.

fact, they all seem rather indifferent about it. But then again, why would they be? She’s just a stranger passing through their lives.

The truth quickly reveals itself when Ana tells her brother that she had “a weird feeling” while watching the news on TV. The news report showed another missing woman and Ana became terrified because that woman looks exactly

The Strangers (2008)

A married couple staying in an isolated vacation house receive a knock on the door in the middle of the night. What ensues is a violent invasion by three strangers, their faces hidden behind masks.

The couple must somehow get past their attackers and escape to safety, while trying to figure out what connects them all.

**Based on true events, The Strangers centers around Kristen and James, a young couple who travel to a secluded mobile home in the woods for a weekend getaway to help ease Kristen’s chronic nightmares. But when James leaves to pick up some food at a gas station, he returns to find that his wife has been abducted from the trailer and her screams can be heard coming from outside.

James attempts to rescue his wife from their unknown assailants but is knocked unconscious and awakens the next day in his car with little memory of what exactly transpired during the previous night. Now with only pieces of a shattered reality to guide him, James sets out on a mission to save Kristen before it’s too late…The Strangers finds itself amongst some pretty stiff competition this year, but I think it will find its way into the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere, thanks to its combination
