Blood and Black Lace (1964)

Watching Blood and Black Lace is like stumbling across a trove of lost treasures, untouched for decades. It’s a rare film that captures the cinematic style of the 1960s, but also transcends it to become a unique statement about the horror genre.

The film was the first in a series of three made by Argento that features the supernatural character “The Three Mothers”, based on the concept of the three ancient and evil witches, known as the “Mater Suspiriorum”, the “Mater Tenebrarum” and the “Mater Lachrymarum” from the author Thomas De Quincey’s essay of the same title. In this story, they are three ancient and powerful witches who are worshipped by a modern cult. They live in Rome, Berlin and New York City respectively. The film stars Anthony Franciosa, Daria Nicolodi, John Saxon, Stefania Casini and Veronica Lario.

The film was followed by two sequels: 1987’s Opera and 1989’s Trauma.

The original poster for this movie is called “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” and was made by a Swedish artist named Carl Norac. The painting is based on the famous Pieta statue by Michelangelo.

In 1970, a young photographer named Francesca Woodman (1958–1981) took her own life at the age of 22 by jumping off the roof of a building in New York City. There were no witnesses to verify what really happened that night, but over time it has been alleged that she was discovered by a friend, with her camera still in her hand. She had just finished shooting her final series of self-portraits called “The Suicide Photographs,” which made up the last roll of film in her camera.

Woodman was born in 1958 to an upper-class family in Colorado. Around the age of 15, she began experimenting with photography and quickly developed a reputation for herself among the burgeoning art scene in Colorado. At age 17, Woodman moved to Boston to study at the famed School of the Museum of Fine Arts and later moved to New York City where she became part of the vibrant downtown arts scene. Seven Blood-Stained Orchids (1972)

This is a classic Shaw Brothers film that is a great example of the way in which old-style kung fu films were gradually moving from plots that revolved around revenge to more contemporary stories involving themes such as anti-heroism and greed. Here, the protagonist is a young man called Ah Lung, who gets involved with a group of smugglers and gangsters. He thinks he’s on the side of the good guys, but finds himself being manipulated by everyone. (In this sense, it’s not unlike the very first kung fu movie I wrote about here .)

The villains are led by a character called “Snake” Gudan, played by Lo Lieh, who was one of the biggest stars in the Shaw Brothers stable in the early 70s. Gudan is very much an archetypal villain character – cruel and sadistic with a mask-like face – but Lo Lieh manages to bring something new to it every time he’s on screen.

His snake-like body movements and darting eyes create an almost hypnotic effect. The fight sequences are a bit briefer and less spectacular than some Shaw Brothers movies but are still pretty good – particularly when you consider that this was co-directed by Chang Cheh, one of the studio’s more

When I was in middle school, a friend’s mother gave me a bottle of Chanel No. 19. It smelled like the future to me: When I wore it, I felt grown-up, mysterious and powerful. A few years ago, I got a bottle for my mother’s birthday. She had never worn perfume before and didn’t treat it with much respect — she stored it in her bathroom medicine cabinet above the sink and would occasionally splash some on when we were going out to dinner.

In the bathroom one day, about a year after she received the perfume, I noticed an odd smell emanating from the cabinet — a dank, musty odor that wasn’t entirely unpleasant but made me think of vintage clothing stores or old books. The smell seemed to be coming from the box of Chanel No. 19 sitting on top of the cabinet.

Not knowing what else to do, I opened the box to see if maybe something had spilled inside (perfume is notoriously sticky and viscous). But everything inside was dry and intact.
