What Is The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro?

Blackmagic Design’s newest camera, the URSA Mini Pro, is a lot of fun. It’s a true cinema camera. They’ve done quite a bit of work to make it comfortable to use, and they’ve added some excellent features like built-in waveform and vector scope monitors, global shutter, and relayoutable 4K 12-bit RAW images.

The camera records to compact flash media in 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW or Apple ProRes 422 HQ (HQX) formats. It can also record in several flavors of lossless compressed 8-bit RAW to SD cards (RAW-to-XQ), an interesting hybrid that gives you the same image quality as uncompressed RAW but uses much less card space. Files are recorded with a standard ISO setting of 800 with a 14 stops of dynamic range using the full sensor area.

The Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro has the same sensor and lens mount as their 4K production camera, the URSA. It’s a Super 35 sized CMOS sensor with dual native ISO ratings of 800 and 5000 depending on how its mounted. This is a significant upgrade over the original URSA camera because it allows users to shoot in bright sunlight.

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Cinematic Super 35 12k Sensor

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro is a camera designed specifically for filmmakers. It’s meant to be used by filmmakers not only as a camera but also as a tool to help create their films. Blackmagic calls it “The World’s First Super 35 Sensor Digital Film Camera”.

Truly, it’s professional grade. The sensor is designed in such a way that it gives you cinematic images that are visually pleasing and sharp.

It’s 4.6K sensor can capture images at 12-stops of dynamic range with true “log-style” raw image processing. With its built-in SSD recorder, you can record directly to your media of choice, whether that’s SSDs or an external HDD.

An amazing feature about this camera is the lens mount which is compatible with both EF and PL mounts! This allows you to attach practically any cinema or photographic lens onto the camera body. And because it has dual native ISO support, you can choose to shoot your film in either 800 or 5000 ISO!

With its modular design, easily interchangeable lenses and accessories, you can use Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro for all sorts of different things! With its variety of connections — audio XLR inputs and outputs, 3D LUTs, timecode and more — it’s an

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Shoot In 12k, Edit On A Laptop

I’m really excited about this camera, as it has a sensor that captures over 12K resolution. I’m looking forward to using it for many projects. I’ll also be using the Blackmagic Design Desktop Video Utility for Mac to capture ProRes HQ files with the camera. I wrote about this recently in an article on the blog, but I’ll cover it here again:

What are the benefits of ProRes HQ?

With ProRes HQ you get the best image quality possible from the URSA Mini Pro. It’s a 12-bit codec and doesn’t need any further processing in post. This means your files are smaller than with other codecs like ProRes 422 (which is only 10-bit) and you can do more with your images in post, such as grading and effects etc.

I’m shooting in 12K RAW+ProRes HQ because when doing greenscreen keying or compositing, it’s always best to have more information than less.

You want to be able to pull out as much detail as possible from your footage when adding graphics or motion elements and you don’t want your footage to look soft because of a compression algorithm or so called “sharpening”. Shooting in ProRes HQ will give us better results straight off the card .

Blackmagic Raw Fueled Image Capture

Blackmagic Design has released a new beta version of the free Blackmagic Raw video recording software, which is available to download from the Blackmagic Design website.

Although the release notes for version 1.1.1 seem pretty cursory at this stage, the update does appear to be a significant improvement to what was already a very capable piece of software that supports a wide range of camera formats, including Redcode raw and Arri’s OpenEXR format.

Trying to download the software (which is available as a Mac application only at this time) produced an error message with some fairly generic troubleshooting advice: “Try again later or go to www.blackmagic-design.com/support.”

I suspect that means there are issues with the new software, but having checked out the Blackmagic Design website, it looks like it hasn’t been updated since February 2012 anyway, so perhaps that’s all in preparation for whatever else is coming next.

The beta software does support Blackmagic Cinema Camera footage as well as Red Epic and Scarlet footage shot in REDCODE raw and Apple ProRes 422 files from an AJA Cion and an Atomos Ninja. Unfortunately, it appears not to support Canon 5D Mark III clips recorded in Canon’s Cinema RAW Light format as well as

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Optimized For Fast Flexible Post Production

From the moment it arrives on set, the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro can be used for fast and efficient post production. Its high-performance SSDs provide super fast data transfer speeds so you can keep up with the demands of today’s non-linear editing systems.

The removable 4.6K image sensor can be quickly removed from the camera body and replaced with a EF or PL lens mount, or left in place and recording to affordable SD cards. You can then choose to shoot in CinemaDNG RAW at 4.6K 2.4:1 or downscale to HD for faster editing sessions.

The global shutter of the image sensor means there is no line skipping when shooting moving subjects and it also supports an electronic rolling shutter mode that is ideal for fast shooting situations such as sport and action.

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro also features a built in 10-bit, 3G-SDI output so you can connect directly to professional monitors including DaVinci Resolve Studio’s new high resolution 7″ 4K large screen color corrector to use its advanced waveform, histogram and false color grading tools.

You can even connect two HDMI monitors for additional viewing options. You get full remote control of every feature of DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Generation 5 Color Science

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Generation 5 Color Science uses the same new large format sensor as the Blackmagic URSA Broadcast camera. This means that you get the same stunning super wide dynamic range of 16 stops, and with MFT lenses you can use apertures up to T8.0 with no crop factors

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Generation 5 Color Science also has better low light sensitivity with four times the sensitivity of HD so it can shoot in extremely dark conditions and still get results with incredible image quality.

You can also record full 4K 60 fps with just one single click in Blackmagic RAW or Apple ProRes which is perfect for getting perfect slow motion shots from your video footage.

With built-in 12G-SDI and support for Ultra HD 50p recording, you can even output live to an external monitor or recorder! The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Generation 5 Color Science also features built in waveform monitors and vector scope for accurate exposure control and color grading.

Ursa Mini Pro 12k Data Rate Calculator

If you’re wondering how long it will take to transmit data from point A to point B, this tool will help.

Description:This calculator determines the time to transfer data from an Ursa Mini Pro (or other camera) to a computer via FireWire. The calculator provides a table for different file sizes, frame rates, and bitrates. The calculator also provides dB gain information for specific distances.

Description:Distance (m): File Size (mb): Frame Rate (fps): Bitrate (mbps):

Explanation of Data

The distance is the distance between the camera and the computer. The file size is how large the data file is that needs to be transferred. The frame rate is how fast you are adding new frames of data. The bitrate is how quickly you are transferring the data file from the camera to your computer.

To get the time it would take to transfer a data file from an Ursa Mini Pro to a computer with an i7 processor you can use this equation:

Time = ((Distance • 0.393) • 60 • File Size • 0.0004342933) / ((Frame Rate • 1000) / 8)

For example if you are transferring a 2 GB video file at 30 frames per second over 100

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro is an incredibly compact camera that you can take absolutely anywhere — whether you’re shooting a corporate interview or an epic feature film.

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro is a professional digital film camera that’s capable of producing the highest quality images. It has native support for 12-bit raw recording, so you’ll be able to capture all of the detail recorded on any of the world’s best film stocks.

You can even record on multiple media cards and switch between them during recording without missing a beat!

Flexibility

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro features a modular design that makes it really convenient for a wide range of productions—from commercials, music

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Interchangeable Lens Mounts

If you’re looking for a camera that can shoot both 4K and HD, you should look at the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro. This camera is compact, portable and has a wide range of interchangeable lens mounts. You can choose from PL, B4, Canon EF or Nikon F lens mounts to get the exact camera you need

. You’ll know if this is the right camera for you if you have a desire to shoot in a variety of situations and need to be able to change lenses quickly depending on your needs. If you’re thinking about getting into filmmaking or video production, it’s important that you start with a versatile camera that can grow with your needs over time.

If you want an interchangeable lens mount, then the URSA Mini Pro is certainly worth considering. The design allows for a number of different lenses to be used depending on what type of shot you’re trying to accomplish. For example:

A long lens may be required when shooting wildlife or sports events from far away.

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro Built In Precision Nd Filters

One of the most exciting features of the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro is it’s built in precision neutral density filters. When you combine this filter with the shallow depth of field that a large sensor camera design has, you can create some stunning shots.

Trying to capture video footage in bright daylight and still have a heavily exposed image is one of the most difficult challenges that cinematographers face. This is why you see so many videos shot at night and a lot of videos shot indoors with hard lights that totally eliminate any sense of atmosphere.

The new sensor on the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro has 16 stops of dynamic range which gives you an incredible amount of latitude to work with when you are shooting in bright sunlight

. To help balance out the exposure you can dial-in up to 10 stops of ND filtration on the lens to darken down your exposure by 10 f-stops. There are two types of ND filters available that will help you achieve the look you want when working outdoors.

You can use a rotating filter holder which holds 4 x 4 ND filters or use a rotating turret which holds 6 x 6 ND filters. The filter holder rotates 360 degrees so if you are using several different filters on your lens and decide to change from one ND

This camera is truly a game changer in the broadcast industry!

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro records directly to externally mounted disks with support for Ultra HD resolution up to 3840 x 2160 at 30 fps

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro High Resolution Monitoring And Camera Control

The Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro is the latest addition to Blackmagic Design’s line of professional digital film cameras. The Mini Pro is designed to provide an affordable “all-in-one” solution for high end productions while also offering modular flexibility that makes it possible to use multiple cameras in one shoot.

Touring a filming location before a shoot can be helpful, but on a low budget production you may need to find ways to make sure that everything will work as expected once you are ready to start rolling cameras. Camera monitoring lets you see exactly what the lens sees on set and provides critical control over exposure and focus, which can be especially helpful if you’ll be shooting with a wide range of lenses from short focal length primes to long focal length zooms.

Without monitoring and control, it’s impossible to get critical focus and exposure correct. Using camera monitoring really helps when you’re shooting with wide angle lenses of 18mm or wider, because these lenses have very little depth of field at close distances.

By using the zoom and focus controls on the monitor you can adjust the image until it looks right, ensuring that when you start shooting with a longer focal length lens, your background will be out of focus where you want it.

While professional digital cinema cameras have built
