From landmark indies to star-studded blockbusters, Steven Soderbergh has restlessly forged an eclectic body of work.

Best Steven Soderbergh Movies

Let’s start off with a lesser-known Steven Soderbergh movie.

The Good German (2006)

“The Good German” is a 2006 film about an American journalist who falls in love with a woman while covering Berlin in 1948.

The story follows the two lovers as they are separated and reunited over the course of three decades, from East & West Germany to America. This movie is based on Joseph Kanon’s novel “The Good German.”

Once upon a time there was a good German, who went to see The Good German (2006).

It is an informative film that was directed by Steven Spielberg. This movie tells the story of a man named Jakob Wittenborn, who is living in post-war Germany and trying to make it as an author.

He meets up with Lena Brandt, and they start talking about what has happened in their lives since the war ended.

They both seem to have had very different experiences from each other during these years, but they are able to find some common ground when Jakob asks her for help writing his book.

She wants him to know what she experienced so he can write it down for the world to hear or read someday soon.

The Good German has been rated R for violence and brief nudity. It contains strong language, including racial slurs.

Full Frontal (2002)

“Full Frontal” is a 2002 film by Steven Soderbergh that follows the life of an up-and-coming actor, portrayed by David Hyde Pierce.

The film blends elements of comedy and drama to tell the story.

The movie opens with Pierce as he’s in his dressing room getting ready for his theater performance.

He begins talking about how he has had to make compromises along the way in order to get where he is today, but that it was worth it because now he’s on Broadway.

It also shows him dealing with family problems stemming from his father abandoning them when they were children and his mother dying shortly after.

The Underneath (1995)

In the 1995 film “The Underneath” directed by Steven Soderbergh, a drifter (played by Peter Gallagher) becomes entangled in a kidnapping plot with his estranged brother and sister-in-law.

The movie was originally intended to be filmed in black and white but later changed to color after filming began.

The movie is about two brothers who have been separated for many years and are reunited when one of them needs help rescuing his wife from kidnappers.

As they work together, their own unresolved issues come back into focus, bringing uncertainty to both the rescue mission as well as their relationship with each other.

The film follows these two as they decide to take matters into their own hands when it comes to racism and violence against black people in America.

The Laundromat (2019)

When her idyllic vacation takes an unthinkable turn, Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep) begins investigating a fake insurance policy, only to find herself down a rabbit hole of questionable dealings that can be linked to a Panama City law firm and its vested interest in helping the world’s wealthiest citizens amass larger fortunes.

Founding partners Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas) are experts in the seductive ways shell companies and offshore accounts help the rich and powerful prosper.

They are about to show us that Ellen’s predicament only hints at the tax evasion, bribery, and other illicit absurdities that the super-wealthy indulge in to support the world’s corrupt financial system.

Zipping through a kaleidoscope of detours in China, Mexico, Africa (via Los Angeles), and the Caribbean en route to 2016’s Panama Papers publication – where journalists leaked the secret, encrypted documents of Mossack Fonseca’s high-profile patrons.

Kafka (1991)

Kafka, an insurance worker gets embroiled in an underground group after a co-worker is murdered.

The underground group is responsible for bombings all over town, attempting to thwart a secret organization that controls the major events in society. He eventually penetrates the secret organization and must confront them.

Side Effects (2013)

Side Effects is a 2013 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

It follows the life of Emily Taylor, an up-and-coming executive who suddenly finds herself on a downward spiral after she begins taking prescription drugs to deal with her anxiety.

The movie stars Channing Tatum as Emily’s husband Brian, Rooney Mara as Emily’s best friend Theresa, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Dr. Banks, and Jude Law as Dr. Banks’ brother Nigel Dancanfield.

This movie is not suitable for children under 17 years of age without adult accompaniment or parental guidance due to scenes of intense terror, disturbing images, and brief nudity.

Side Effects is a 2013 American psychological thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The plot follows a young woman who, after being prescribed sleep aids for insomnia, begins experiencing bizarre side effects that lead her to uncover the truth about the drug’s dangerous and powerful properties.

(Essentially) this movie starts off as one thing and ends up being something completely different – it has an interesting storyline that keeps you on your toes!

Let Them All Talk (2020)

The plot of the movie revolves around the three best friends who have lost touch with each other because of an ill-fated trip several years ago.

The movie was released on HBO Max on December 10 this year.

Ever since the release of Let Them All Talk, a lot of people have been confused about the ending of Let Them All Talk

Solaris (2002)

The 2002 film Solaris is a science fiction drama directed by Steven Soderbergh.

This movie tells the story of psychologist Chris Kelvin who is sent to explore an abandoned space station orbiting a planet called Solaris, where he finds himself on board with his dead wife and another scientist on the project named Gibarian.

As they try to find out what happened aboard the ship, they are faced with their own pasts in which they must confront some truths about themselves and each other.

After watching this film I found myself thinking more about life as well as death and how we all have the demons that haunt us every day.

The way it was filmed made me feel like I was there inside Chris’ head experiencing everything he did along with him,

Bubble (2006)

Bubble is a 2005 American drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh about three low-paid doll factory workers, one of whom is murdered. Soderbergh also shot and edited the film under the pseudonyms Peter Andrews and Mary Ann Bernard, taken from his father’s given names and his mother’s maiden name, respectively. The film was shot on high-definition video.

Bubble is unusual in that it had no traditional script and used only non-professional actors recruited from the Parkersburg, West Virginia and Belpre, Ohio area, where the film was shot. The lead, Debbie Doebereiner, was found working the drive-through window in a Parkersburg KFC. All lines were improvised according to an outline written by screenwriter Coleman Hough, who previously teamed with Soderbergh on Full Frontal. Bubble was the first of six films Soderbergh planned to shoot and release in the same manner.

The film was released simultaneously in movie theaters and on the cable/satellite TV network HDNet Movies on January 27, 2006; the DVD was released a few days later, on January 31. Schizopolis (1996)

Schizopolis was shot in Soderbergh’s hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana over a period of nine months, beginning in March 1995, on a budget of only $250,000.

Due to Soderbergh’s desire to keep the film simple, many people had multiple duties (i.e. David Jensen played Elmo Oxygen as well as being the casting director and key grip) and many friends and relatives were hired in various capacities.

Betsy Brantley, who plays Mrs. Munson, is Steven Soderbergh’s ex-wife in real life. Soderbergh himself took the lead role, instead of hiring a professional actor, in part because, as he said, “There was just nobody I knew that I could make that demand of – come and work for free for nine months whenever I feel like it in Baton Rouge!”

Schizopolis is a 1996 experimental film directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The film is an avant-garde black comedy about the deceptions and misadventures of Dr. Jeffrey Korchek (played by Soderbergh).

The movie features no dialogue or plot; instead, it consists entirely of nonlinear shots that are meant to be pieced together like a puzzle by the viewer.

Schizopolis explores themes such as capitalism, greed, and mental illness through its surrealistic imagery and various pop culture references including Disney’s “Dumbo” (1941) and

It has been called “a Kafkaesque satire” and “an avant-garde experiment.

On its release in 1996, Schizopolis received mixed reviews from critics who found it too inaccessible for mainstream audiences.

Gray’s Anatomy (1996)

The hit television show, Gray’s Anatomy premiered on March 27th, 2005.

The show is based on the book of the same name written by Dr. Henry Gray in 1858 and follows interns at fictional Seattle Grace Hospital as they learn how to become surgeons in the hospital’s competitive surgical program.

The show stars Ellen Pompeo as protagonist Meredith Grey, one of 14 residents who have each been given a nickname starting with “G” (for example George O’Malley or Gwen Torres).

In addition to surgery scenes, medical cases are often shown through flashbacks that detail events not yet depicted on-screen; this allows for further character development related to past events and relationships with other characters.

Contagion (2011)

Contagion is a movie that was released in 2011.

“High Flying Bird” is a movie that tells the story of an NBA agent who is in need of a new client.

It features many famous basketball players such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant.

“High Flying Bird” has been praised for its storytelling and cinematography by critics such as The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw and Variety’s Owen Gleiberman.

 Unsane (2018)

Unsane is a 2018 American psychological thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer.

The film stars Claire Foy as the protagonist, Sawyer Valentini, a young woman who has been involuntarily committed to a mental institution.

This movie deserves to be seen because it explores the idea of how society handles those that are different in ways you cannot see but can feel.

It also delves into what it feels like for someone battling with mental illness and how they feel trapped inside their own mind.

The film stars Claire Foy as Sawyer Valentini, a woman who voluntarily checks herself into an institution after she has been stalking her former boyfriend for the past four years.

The story unfolds in flashbacks that detail how Sawyer was raped at age 18 during one of her college parties.

She reports it to the police but no charges are filed due to lack of evidence and bad timing on her part (she waited 24 hours before going to the hospital).

Her stalker then begins harassing her with threatening phone calls which causes Sawyer’s paranoia to grow worse.

In the award-winning movie Unsane, a woman decides to check herself into a mental institution for the weekend.

She begins to suspect that her stay is not as voluntary as she originally thought.

Unsane was released in 2018 and stars Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s The Crown) and has been reviewed favorably by critics.

Behind the Candelabra is a 2013 American biographical drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Behind the Candelabra tells the true story of the pianist and Liberace’s lover, Scott Thorson (Matt Damon).

It also stars Michael Douglas as Liberace, Dan Aykroyd as his manager Seymour Heller, and Rob Lowe as Thorson’s attorney Bob Black.

In this installment, Danny has assembled his team for another heist-gone-wrong in Europe; this time at the Royal Mint of Bern.

Ocean’s Twelve was written primarily by Ted Griffin and Terry Rossio,

with a screenplay that had contributions from Brian Koppelman & David Levien (2002), Stephen Rivele & Christopher Wilkinson (1974) (uncredited), and William Goldman (1968).

This film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Film Editing; Best Sound Mixing;

Ocean’s Thirteen (2007)

Ocean’s Thirteen is a 2007 American heist film and the third installment in the Ocean’s Trilogy.

The plot follows Danny Ocean (George Clooney) as he plans to rob three casinos owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), using their money manager, Willy Bank (Al Pacino), as an inside man.

It was released on June 8, 2007, in the United States and Canada by Warner Bros.

Ocean’s Thirteen is a must-see for any fan of crime thrillers or cinema classics!

And Everything Is Going Fine (2010)

And Everything Is Going Fine is a 2010 documentary film directed by Steven Soderbergh about the life of monologist Spalding Gray. It premiered on January 23, 2010, at the Slamdance Film Festival and was screened at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival and the 2010 Maryland Film Festival. Soderbergh had earlier directed Gray’s filmed monologue, Gray’s Anatomy.

Soderbergh decided against recording narration and new interviews. The film instead consists entirely of archival footage, principally numerous excerpts from monologues by and interviews with Gray, spanning some 20 years, as well as home movies of Gray as an infant. Music for the film was composed by Gray’s son Forrest.

Haywire (2011)

It follows Mallory Kane (Carano) as she tries to track down a missing person, leading her in pursuit of revenge against those who tried to kill her.

Haywire is one in a string of films that Soderbergh has made since retiring from his directorial career in 2009 due to personal reasons.

His first project following this retirement was Contagion, which he co-wrote and produced but did not direct because he wanted more time with his family.

King of the Hill (1993)

King of the Hill is a 1993 American drama film written and directed by Steven Soderbergh. It is the second he directed from his own screenplay following his 1989 Palme d’Or-winning film Sex, Lies, and Videotape. It too was nominated for the Palme d’Or, at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.

Based on the Depression-era bildungsroman memoir of writer A. E. Hotchner, the film follows the story of a boy struggling to survive on his own in a hotel in St.

Louis after his mother enters a sanatorium with tuberculosis and his younger brother is sent to live with an uncle.

His father, a German immigrant and traveling salesman working for the Hamilton Watch Company is off on long trips from which the boy cannot be certain he will return.

Logan Lucky (2017)

“Logan Lucky” is a 2017 American heist film written and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

It stars Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Seth MacFarlane, Katie Holmes, Hilary Swank, and Daniel Craig.

The film tells the story of two brothers who set out to execute an elaborate robbery during the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.

The project was conceived in 2015 when Soderbergh approached screenwriter Rebecca Blunt about developing crime stories for his production company.

Blunt had no interest in writing a screenplay but did agree to give him ideas if one came up that she liked.

Logan Lucky is a heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Magic Mike) and starring Channing Tatum.

The movie tells the story of two brothers who live in West Virginia and plan to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway during a NASCAR race.

This may sound like an impossible task but they have put together an ingenious plan using old dirt bikes from their father’s junkyard, silicone masks to disguise their appearance, and more than just luck on their side.

The film was released in theaters on August 18th 2017 after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival earlier that year.

It has been met with rave reviews from critics praising it for its humor as well as its execution of both suspenseful moments

Che (2008)

This movie is about a man who was born in Argentina.

His name was Ernesto “Che” Guevara, and he became one of the most famous revolutionary leaders in history.

He had his own ideology that many people admired and followed.

Che died on October 9th 1967, 30 years ago this month.

The film was directed by Steven Soderbergh, who also produced it with Benicio del Toro as executive producer.

It stars Benicio Del Toro as Che Guevara and Javier Bardem as Fidel Castro.

The film features extensive footage of guerrilla warfare in Cuba against the Fulgencio Batista regime during 1956-1959, including scenes where Cuban revolutionaries execute captured enemies on camera.

The Limey (1999)

The late 1970s was a time when there was an influx of drugs, crime, and violence in Britain.

It is important for viewers to have some understanding of what life was like so they can better understand the story that unfolds on screen.

It tells the story of an American ex-convict, Terry Valentine, who travels to Los Angeles with revenge on his mind.

He hires a private investigator named Stanley for help finding the man he believes killed his daughter in England.

This film is great because not only does it have action and suspense but it also has a good moral message that one should never forget those they love and let them shape your life decisions.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Terence Stamp as a British ex-convict who finds himself in Southern California on the trail of his daughter’s killer.

This is a classic example of an action movie that also deals with themes like revenge and family ties.

The Limey is a 1999 British-American crime film starring Terence Stamp, Lesley Manville and Bill Nighy.

The movie was written by Lem Dobbs and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Magic Mike (2012)

The 2012 movie Magic Mike starring Channing Tatum is based on his real-life experience as a male stripper during the 1990s.

The film follows Mike, played by Tatum, who takes a young man under his wing and teaches him how to be a stripper.

This movie contains the nudity of both men and women, so if you are offended by either gender being shown in this way then it may not be for you.

For those who can tolerate this level of nudity, there is an informative story that will keep you entertained throughout the movie.

The movie has everything: drama, comedy, and eye candy.

It’s worth watching just to see Channing Tatum dance shirtless!

“Magic Mike” deals with some tough issues such as gangs and drugs while also showing the differences between what these men do when they’re being paid vs. doing it solely for pleasure with no monetary incentive.

The Girlfriend Experience (2009)

A 2009 movie that has received a lot of criticism is about the life of a high-class escort.

It stars Sasha Grey and was written by director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Brian Koppelman.

The Girlfriend Experience is a story about Christine Reade, played by Sasha Grey, who becomes an escort to pay for law school tuition.

She meets with her clients in hotels and dates them for up to 12 hours at a time before seeing them again.

In order to maintain boundaries between her personal life and work as an escort, she doesn’t date any other men or women outside of her profession.

As we follow Christine on this journey we see how it affects those around her including friends, family members, coworkers, and clients alike.

Lisa’s desire to be loved pushes her into agreeing to exclusive arrangements that make her feel like she has more in common with Mr. Jones than just being paid for sex.

As they progress from client/prostitute to girlfriend/boyfriend, their relationship becomes fraught with jealousy, power struggles and lies until it reaches its tragic end on New Year’s Eve 1999-2000.”

Erin Brockovich (2000)

Erin Brockovich is a biographical film based on the real life story of an unemployed single mother who became a legal assistant and ended up being one of the most important whistleblowers in US history.

It stars Julia Roberts as Erin Brockovich and was directed by Steven Soderbergh.

In the 1990s, Erin Brockovich was a struggling single mother who didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life.

She ended up working in a small law firm and one day, while attending a meeting for work-related purposes,

she noticed that Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) had been responsible for leaking Chromium 6 into the groundwater of Hinkley California.

This led to an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which eventually resulted in PG&E paying $333 million dollars as restitution for contaminating the drinking water of Hinkley residents.

The movie “Erin Brockovich” tells this story through Julia Roberts’ portrayal of real-life Erin Brockovich and is worth watching if you want to learn about.

She has no formal legal education and must prove her worth, despite being told she’s too unfocused and undisciplined.

Eventually, she manages to uncover an environmental contamination case that turns into the largest class-action lawsuit ever filed against a corporate polluter.

It’s a triumphant underdog story with inspiring messages about the power of persistence and hard work.

The Informant! (2009)

The Informant! is a 2009 film starring Matt Damon and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

It’s based on the true story of an FBI informant named Mark Whitacre who cooperated with federal authorities in order to avoid being prosecuted for his role in an international price-fixing conspiracy involving lysine, a food additive used primarily in animal feeds.

The movie has been nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor (Matt Damon).

He also exposed how Bovine Growth Hormone milked cows were being injected with chemicals that could cause cancerous tumors but continued to be sold without warning labels or recalls.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)

What do you get when you take a story of betrayal, infidelity, and murder and mix in a dash of 1980s culture?

You get Steven Soderbergh’s 1989 film Sex, Lies, and Videotape.

The movie is based on the book by James Carville about his experiences as an attorney for John DeLorean.

It stars James Spader as Dr. Graham who has just opened up his practice to find that he can’t keep any patients because they are too embarrassed to tell him their problems due to the topic matter he deals with on a daily basis.

Anything from marital issues to sexual dysfunction is fair game for this psychotherapist so long as it doesn’t involve children or animals…or anything illegal.

The story follows James Spader as Graham who goes from one affair to another until he meets Ann played by Andie MacDowell.

The two start an affair which leads to some devastating consequences for both parties involved.

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

The movie, Ocean’s Eleven (2001) is a remake of the original 1960 film. It stars George Clooney as Danny Ocean and includes an ensemble cast of professional actors.

Adapted from the 1960 heist film of the same name starring Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, this modern remake stars George Clooney as Danny Ocean who assembles an eleven-man team to rob three Las Vegas casinos at exactly midnight on New Year’s Eve.

The story is told from Danny Ocean’s point of view as he assembles his team of eleven specialists who will help him in orchestrating three simultaneous robberies at Las Vegas casinos on New Year’s Eve.

In order to get their attention, they decide to rob $150 million worth of items from one casino and use it as bait for their real plan.

They steal jewelry, money, and a few cars before introducing themselves by robbing the vault at the Bellagio Hotel Casino in Las Vegas during an exhibition game between The Liberace Showroom Orchestra and Royal Philharmony.
