Sweet 20 Movie Review

Sweet 20 is an Indonesian drama comedy Movie, a remake of the 2014 Korean film Miss Granny. I can't deny that this movie has caught my eye since the first trailer came out. The trailer showcased bright colors, lots of laughs, and the promise of a good time.

Sweet 20 tells the story of a 70 year old fussy grandmother named Fatmawati (Niniek L Karim), who lives with her son Aditya (Lukman Sardi), daughter-in-law Salma (Cut Mini), and two grandchildren, Juna (Kevin Julio) and Luna (Alexa Key). Fatmawati has always been proud of Aditya, until one day when she finds out that she will be sent to the nursing home. It hurts her that she has to leave home. On her way to the nursing home, her sight falls upon a photo studio called Forever Young, and proceeds to having her picture taken for her funeral. All is well, until Fatmawati realizes that she has turned 50 years younger, back into her beautiful 20 year old self. Fatmawati started to live her new life as Mieke, a name of her idol - Mieke Wijaya. As time goes by, Mieke gets the opportunity to realize her dream to become a singer, which was something she couldn't do back then. Mieke's unique speech and fashion style, just like a 70 year old woman, successfully conquers the hearts of 3 men: a music producer (Morgan Oey), her own grandson Juna, and Hamzah (Slamet Rahardjo) who has been in love with her since 50 years ago. Mieke (or Fatmawati) eventually has to make a choice whether to continue her new life or go back to her normal life.

Maybe this plot seems cliché, but trust me, you'll enjoy it so much when you see it. The story is told by sad flashback scenes and funny present-time ones, and concludes in a heartwarming bittersweetness.

Sweet 20 is also considered a musical, because it has some singing scenes with Mieke and Juna's band. I love how the songs go with their band's style and how the characters are feeling or have felt before in their lives.

One issue I have with this movie is I think that they could add around 10 minutes of screen time to get more in depth with some of the characters's characterizations and their relationships. For example, I can get why Mieke (or Fatmawati) rejects Juna since he is her grandson, but there's not much reasoning behind how Mieke fell in love with Alan. Their interaction scenes are a bit too brief for me.

Overall, Sweet 20 is a bright, funny, and heartwarming movie with a little flaw but everyone will still have a good time watching it. I give it an 8 out of 10.
