Bollywood has always been one of the best trend setters for the fashion industry ever since its inception decades ago. The B-town Divas have over the years influenced their fans and audience, or rather the entire nation.

Youngsters change their wardrobes match up with the latest fashion that we see in the films. Copying their hot favorite star in dressing style or grooming has evolved from being the conservative kinds to becoming bold and that reflects the change in the society that the films bring about. Today wearing a Bikini in a Film is not a daring move any more, or showing off your skin isn’t a taboo if the role demands it. However, it’s surely interesting to see how much Bollywood can influence to bring about the change and it has been happening since 1950 when iconic actresses of Bollywood donned the Bikini, and the trend continued. Here we take a look at the some of the most beautiful and sexiest heroines who dared to don a two piece!

Bikini did not start in the present league with Bollywood actresses. There were the earlier heroines who wore the “bold” tag with pride and were no less when it came to looking hot in the bravest of the swim wears!

The trend setting is back from the epic era. One would sit up and look again to see the demure actress Nutan who donned the black Swim Suit. Right from Nutan to Pamela Anderson they have all inspired the women by their amazing beach looks.

In 1958 for the film “Dilli Ka Thug”, actress Nutan had worn the swim suit as the role demanded it. She portrayed the role of a swimming champion and the film was considered to be quite unique. She wore the swimsuit again in 1970 for the film Yaadgar.
Sharmila Tagore, the Bong beauty had created a sensation when she donned the bikini and even did a cover shot for the most popular film magazine’ Filmfare’ in 1966. Her look was a sensation but the actress carried off her bold appearance with dignity wearing a blue swim suit for the famous song., “Aasman Se Aaya Farishta”, starring opposite Shammi Kapoor for the film “An Evening in Paris.”
In 1973 we had the film “Heera-Panna” which was a super hit and Zeenat Aman playing the model in the film. She looked ravishing and stunning. Thus the Hindi film heroines had paved way from being “just Indian” to bringing in the western trends that continued to remain in vogue till date.

Zeenat Aman established herself as the sex symbol after she wore swimsuits not just in “Heera Panna” but also in “Qurbani” in 1980 and was most comfortable wearing swim suits for photo shoots thereafter.

Actress Tanuja in the film “Chand Aur Suraj” in 1965 picturised in a swimsuit looked glamorous and had got popular as it was considered to be a lovely song.

Saira Banu in the film “April Fool” was another unforgettable film as she looked stunning and the highlight of the scene was a foreign location with swimmers who synchronized in the pool with grace.

In the film “Sangam”, actress Vyjayantimala is shown donning a swim suit for the entire duration of the song…picturized by Raj Kapoor for the memorable song in the film.

Later many other actress of that era soon followed suit, Rekha, Sridevi, Helen, Bindu, Jayasshree T were also seen donning the suit for a scene in the film, however there were a few actresses like Meena Kumari, Waheeda Rehman, and Jaya Bhaduri who refused and managed to stay away from the peer pressure of donning the swim suit.

In the same year,  Raj Kapoor’s blockbuster film ‘ Bobby’ was a rave among the debutant Dimple Kapadia portraying the sweet 16 year old in a bikini . The scene was one of the most popular one from the film.    Raj Kapoor had stated that he got the idea for Dimple Kapadia’s bikini clad scene from the Archies comics and the character Veronica from the series inspired him.  Dimple Kapadia in Bobby looked not just hot but  she also had the right body and shape to flaunt to enhance her sex-appeal.

Dimple Kapadia who had quit films after her film ‘ Bobby’ to marry superstar Rajesh Khanna had made a classic comeback in Ramesh Sippy’s film ‘Saagar’ in which she is wearing a sarong exposing her skin

Rakhee the demure actress too appeared in a revealing black swim suit as the twin sister in the film ‘Sharmilee’. The actress showing her cleavage did look ravishing but as her grace persona she could carry off the scene of the bolder sister in the film with grace.

A few of the films that the directors incorporated a beach or a swimming pool scene were Apradh showing yesteryear actress Mumtaz wearing a swim suit and Parveen Babi the beautiful actress also wore the two piece for a scene in ‘Yeh Nazdeekiyan’ which became a popular topic during the time the film was released.

Madhuri Dixit the dancing queen and one of the most iconic actress of the Hindi cinema wore the costume twice. She looked hot in ‘Tezaab’. She also wore a swim suit in films like Mujrim and Pukaar.

Deepika Padukone had sizzling chemistry in films Race and Cocktail. The beautiful leggy actress in her swim suits could look hot and sexy that would have made any boy go weak in his knees.
From the black and white days to the coloured films era we have had several actresses who sported the bikini or the swimsuits.  Well! the list is quite long and the gist is today wearing a bikini is not a novelty any more.  The saga continues but going back on to the flashback wherein the mindset of our society was considered and is still considered bold and fashionable. Not every heroine is game though some have gone ahead .

The first actress to have donned the bikini in Indian Cinema is actress Meenakshi Shirodkar, grandmother to actress Shilpa and Namrata Shirodkar. She had worn the bikini for the film Brahmachari made in Marathi.

In 1950 actress Nalini Jaywant was confident enough to wear the swim suit starring opposite Ashok Kumar in a duet for the song in teh film Sangram.  The film went on to be a big hit. In 1951 Nargis donned the swimsuit and the on screen chemistry was too sizzling and is still talked about till date. Starring opposite Raj Kapoor in the film Awara the couple was considered to be one of the hottest onscreen pair.

Among the most recent bikini clad actresses we have had almost all the top stars whether they are size zero like Kareena Kapoor or Sunny Leone who sported several designer wears in Bikinis.  Followed by Alia Bhat who did not think twice to don the suit in one of the films ‘Shaandar’ by Karan Johar.

We had Bipasha Basu looking fit and carrying off a perfect bikini fit body in Dhoom 2.

Lara Dutta followed on with her efforts in the an underwater action scene in which she is required to wear a swim suit in the film ‘Blue’, and its not that every film with the actress in bikini becomes a hit film, some have bombed miserably and Blue was one of them and the film was considered to be terrible.

Sonam in the two piece went unnoticed in the film Bewakoofiyan.

Bikini today is considered to be a fashion and is a style statement for women as it symbolizes the independent spirit and brings out their sensuality  without being judged .. We have Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor,  Neha Dhupia, Anushka Sharma, Nargis Fakhri, Sonakshi Sinha, Jacqueline Fernandes who have also followed suit.
Kareena Kapoor got her immense popularity for her size-zero look and she flaunted her sexy body in the film ‘Tashan’. While the actress looked gorgeous and perfect in the swim suit she also set the trend for everyday girl.

Bollywood babes lesser known for the bikini scene have been proud to leave the iconic magic on screen.

The Indian beauties who rose to stardom outside Bollywood were Miss Universe Sushmita Sen and Miss World Aishwarya Rai who looked charismatic and confident and were the front runners for the swim suit round. They may have not donned on the suit for the film but they were the women to become independent and proved that it was time that the change has to come and women can wear whatever they please. The bold move also helped to build a strong and a positive image for Indian Women who are ready to take on anything. Swimming costume saw leaps and bounds of changes within the fashion Industry thanks to Bollywood. The actresses charmed the audience not only with their looks but also the calmness and creating waves by sporting a bikini the game changer in Bollywood’s latest scenario.

Today’s leading ladies wearing a two piece is no big deal in fact it hardly matters as long as they have the epitome of a perfectly tonned body to carry off and flaunt.
