NOTABLE BROTHER-SISTER RELATIONSHIP IN BOLLYWOOD MOVIES

Bollywood has thrown up a variety of films on subjects ranging from politics to crime; love stories to historical legends existing in the real world. Although most mainstream commercial cinema churn out love stories or action-filled thrillers and dramas there are certain filmmakers and scriptwriters who have delivered some unforgettable flicks focussing on real world subjects. Ample films have been made on topics which ordinary people can relate to. Some of these films have covered the beautiful relationships between siblings; especially the one between Brother and Sister. On this occasion of Raksha Bandhan, here are the Bollywood films that depicted this wonderful relationship onscreen.

Iqbal:

Iqbal is an inspirational story of a hearing-impaired and mute youngster named Iqbal, played by Shreyas Talpade, and his sister Khadija, played by Shweta Prasad. The story revolves around their lives dedicated to fight against all odds and live their dreams. Iqbal has one such dream of becoming a professional cricketer, but his father discourages him. At one point he is even thrown out of the academy. In this way, the siblings face several hurdles, but their collective enthusiasm aided by a veteran cricketer played by Naseerudin Shah, helps to transform Iqbal’s dream into reality. Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor and produced by Subhash Ghai under the banner of “Mukta Searchlight Films”, the coming-of-age sports drama went onto receive the National Award for Best Film on Other Social issues.

Kai Po Che

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, ‘The Three Mistakes Of My Life’, Kai Po Che! is an buddy drama film directed by Abhishek Kapoor starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummmar Rao and Amit Sadh as the three leading protagonists. Whilst the film revolves around a number of characters and their relationships, the one shared between Ishaan and Vidya is the deepest. Even though the elder brother doesn’t pay much heed to his own education, he makes sure that his younger sister doesn’t lose out on the opportunity to learn everything in life. Ishaan even asks his friend to impart tuitions in Mathematics, but his domineering nature kicks in when he finds out about their affair.

Pyaar Kiya Toh Darnya Kya

Written and directed by Sohail Khan, Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya is a romantic comedy film starring Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Kajol and Dharmendra in crucial roles. The film is shot in the very famous school in Indore. Though the story was predominantly centred on the love between Salman Khan and Kajol, one of the main features of the film was also the over-possessive brother played by Dharmendra and his love for his younger sister. All brothers are a bit protective about their sisters and this essence of relationship was beautifully captured in the film.

Josh

An action drama film directed by Mansoor Khan, Josh released in 2000 and had Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Chandrachur Singh playing lead roles ably assisted by Sharad Kapoor, Priya Gill and Vivek Vaswani. The film is a remake of West Side Story. The superstars of Bollywood, for the first time, shared screen as twins. Though completely opposite in natures, the brother and sister get along well with each other no matter how bad the situation arises, until Aishwarya Rai falls in love with the brother of Shah Rukh Khan’s rival gang leader.

Dil Dhadakne Do

Directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment, Dil Dhadakne DO is a comedy drama film boasting an ensemble cast of Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar in addition to Rahul Bose, Zarina Wahab playing supporting roles. The story is about a dysfunctional Punjabi family who invite their family and friends on a cruise trip to celebrate the parents’ 30th wedding anniversary. Whilst the film has many stories running parallel but the striking one is between Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra, who share confidence in each other notwithstanding how bad their secrets. Their relationship is a modern-day one which the new generation can relate to.

Dhanak

Written and directed by Nagesh Kukunoor and produced by Manish Kundra, Nagesh Kukunoor and Elahe Hiptoola, the film features Hetal Gadda and Krrish Chhabria playing brother and sister with supporting roles by Chet Dixon, Vipin Sharma, Gulfam Khan, Vibha Chibber, Flora Saini and Vijay Maurya. Released on 17th June, 206, the film won many accolades in international film festivals for its tale showing a sister who promises her brother to get his sight back.

Bumm Bumm Bokle

Directed by Priyadarshan, Bumm Bumm Bole stars Darsheel Safary, Atul Kulkarni, Rituparna Sengupta and newcomer Ziyah Vastani. The film is an official adaptation of Iranian Film, Children of Heaven. The title of the film is based on Aamir Khan’s film “Taare Zameen Par”. The film illustrates the poor condition of a family where parents can’t even afford to buy shoes or uniform for their children. The film flawlessly showcases the pure and simple relationship between the young siblings.

Jaane Tu.. Ya Jaane Na

A coming-of-age romantic drama film starring Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza in key roles, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na is directed by Abbas Tyrewala and produced by Aamir Khan. The movie was a commercial hit and earned tremendous praise and appreciation from the critics and audiences alike. Although the film was a love story, the realistic portrayal of relationship between the siblings won everyone’s hearts. The bickering love-hate relationship between brother (Prateik Babbar) and sister (Genelia D’Souza) added a boost.

Hare Rama Hare Krishna

Directed by Dev Anand and starring Dev Anand himself along with Mumtaz and Zeenat Aman, the movie dealt with the corruption of hippie culture. Dealing with the issue of separated family, the brother sets out to reunite with his sister. The story of the film is loosely based on the the 1968 movie Pysch-Out.

Fiza

Fiza stars Hrithik Roshan, Jaya Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor in lead roles and the movie is directed by Khalid Mohammed. The film revolves around the story of Fiza played by Karisma Kapoor, whose brother Amaan, played by Hrithik Roshan, disappears after riots break out in the city of Bombay in 1993.

Bhaag Milka Bhaag

This sports biographical film is based on the life of Indian athlete Milka Singh but it also happens to delve into the brother sister relationship between Farhan Akhtar and Divya Dutta.

My Brother…Nikhil

Set in Goa and based on the life of Dominic D’ Souza, the movie portrays the life of the protagonist living through the period between 1987 to 1994 when AIDS awareness in India was extremely low. The film focussed on sensitive topics like HIV and homosexuality, which are still considered taboo and discussed with reticence in Indian culture.

Agneepath:

One of the most notable brother-sister relationships portrayed in contemporary cinema, Agneepath is a rendition of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer. The relationship between Hrithik Roshan and his little sister played by Kanika Tiwari is realistically captured by the director.

Chup Chup Ke

Directed by Priyadarshan and originally titled as Khatta Meetha, Chup Chup Ke is adapted from the Malayalam film Punjabi House. The film stars Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor in leading roles along with supporting cast like Neha Dhupia, Suneil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Shakti Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Om Puri. The movie flawless captures the bond between the overprotective brother Mangal, played by Suneil Shetty and his younger sister Shruti, played by Kareena Kapoor.
