Choosing a tent – how not to make a mistake?

Camping is a pleasant, fun pastime that can unite groups of friends for many years. When Camping is well organized, it will definitely become a family tradition. Your trip to the forest begins with shopping: food for the fire, firewood, a mandatory item – an ax, blankets, a good mood, and … wait – but something is missing. Of course, your future shelter from insects and wild animals. It remains to choose a Tent for camping.

Choosing a camping tent is a responsible mission. Agree, no one would like to be cold at night. First of all, let’s understand the terminology and what a camping tent means today. Camping as it is now was brought to us by the Americans. Who hasn’t heard of these delicious roasted marshmallows? In the European interpretation, this is rather a classic version of a long hike in the forest, mountains, and life near the ocean.

How to choose the right tent (tent) that would be best suited for hiking, camping, or fishing? Imagine – you had the opportunity to go on a hike with friends, everyone has solved puzzles, and everyone has several free days in the same period. And, of course, there is a standard exchange of information between you – “do you have an extra sleeping bag?” or “do you have a pop-up tent with a stove jack?” etc. You are lucky – because you have a tent, which you are happy to tell your friends about. And the hike was planned in such a way that it would take a long time to walk. And already on the third kilometer, you have a tongue on your shoulders. It turns out that you have a 4-seater camping tent that weighs 7-8 kg. You begin to change backpacks to carry them in turns, which somewhat spoils the adventure’s impression.

Choosing the right tent is one of the main preparatory stages before any trip to nature for more than one day. And a tent that “someone has lying around somewhere” will not always be suitable. In this article, we will not focus on the design features of Tents or water resistance – it is clear that the greater the water resistance and the better the strength are, the better it is. We will focus on the question of why one tent is chosen for one situation but is absolutely not suitable for another. Let’s have a look at some tips for tent camping.

Let’s return to the previous situation. A large spacious camping tent with many sleeping places and a spacious vestibule (or even two) is very convenient. Even in case of bad weather, you can stay there with the whole company. But in hiking tourism, there will be one person who will “curse” such convenience – this is the one who will rattle it on himself. There are other issues that make such a tent, to put it mildly, “inappropriate.” For example, it is simply impossible to set up such a tent in a mountainous area due to strong winds or limited places with a flat surface. Everything is very simple here – in this case, you need to choose a tent with the least weight that takes up a minimum of space.

Tents for hiking and bicycle tourism – it is them that you should focus your attention on. Of course, ideally, it is a single or double tent. However, there are tents for 3-4 places, which have very little weight and fold up very compactly.

Tents for hiking tourism are very ergonomic – they do not have vestibules (or are very small, only to put other small equipment), designed in such a way that there are minor arcs. The shapes of such tents are mostly hemispheres or half-barrels – they are very easy to unfold and assemble. And for them, two cross arcs are often enough, which, again, reduces the weight of the equipment and simplifies assembly and disassembly. Also, in most such tents, space and weight are saved due to the relatively small height of the tents – they are designed only to spend the night in them – pack up – and continue on the hike.

However, if you like a passive trip to nature and you don’t need to carry a tent on your shoulders for a long time, then a four- or six-seater tunnel-type camping tent, which is the most popular today, will be an excellent solution.

In such tents, the arcs that form the room are crossed, and the arcs that form the vestibule(s) are made in parallel. Or the so-called hub construction of arcs is very often used. This type involves the presence, in fact, of one Y-shaped arc, the links of which are connected to each other (this connection is called a hub) to spend time freely. These tents are primarily high – so the feeling of claustrophobia does not threaten anyone. The frame is also now mostly made of fiberglass, but the number of arcs is already 6-8.

That is, to put it simply, in such a tent, you can already develop a certain life activity at this time, as tents for hiking tourism are mainly intended only for spending the night in them.

But, for example, if you are an avid fisherman, then a tent that is open on one side to watch for bites would ideally suit you. And such fishing tents exist. Such tents will allow you to comfortably enjoy fishing in the sun or even in the rain. Very often, such tents are made in the form of hemispheres, or this shape is sometimes “cut” in half. The main difference between these tents is clear – they have a wide entrance so that you can quickly get out of it to catch fish. This tent is especially relevant for fans of carp fishing, which can last more than one day.

Wrapping up

Finally, it should be noted that there are also universal tents, with which you can go hiking, fishing, and multi-day camping. Of course, they do not provide the same level of convenience and comfort as a specialized tent, but if you are in doubt about the conditions of use or expediency, perhaps the best choice will be exactly this.

We wish you a wonderful camping trip and a good mood throughout your vacation!
