Can you take disposable vapes on an airplane?

It’s perfectly acceptable to bring a wide variety of items on an airplane when you travel. Some items, however, have special packing requirements due to the potential hazards they present – and liquids and batteries are two of those items. When you vape, you deal with both of those things. That’s particularly true of Disposable Vapes. A disposable vape, after all, has both liquid and a battery in a single package – and you can’t separate either of them. So, while you can bring disposable vapes on an airplane, you’ll have to obey the rules that apply to traveling with both liquids and batteries.

Thankfully, traveling with disposable vapes isn’t as difficult as it might sound; it’s just a matter of following a few simple rules. In this article, we’ll explain exactly how to do it.

How to Bring Disposable Vapes on an Airplane

These are the two rules that apply if you want to bring disposable vapes on an airplane.

• Batteries always have an inherent fire risk due to their potential to short circuit and overheat. Therefore, you always need to pack batteries in your carry-on bag. If a battery experiences an issue during a flight, it needs to happen in the passenger area rather than in the luggage compartment. That way, flight staff will be able to deal with the issue.
• Liquids, gels and creams need to be placed in a one-quart zip-top bag and presented for separate inspection if you want to pack them in your carry-on bag. Ordinarily, you can also carry liquid items in your checked luggage. In this case, though, this rule and the rule above both apply because it isn’t possible to remove the liquid or the battery from a disposable vape.

With the above rules in mind, the correct way to bring disposable vapes on an airplane is by sealing them in a one-quart zip-top bag with your other liquids, gels and creams and presenting the bag for separate inspection when you go through Airport security.

In many cases, a disposable vape will have a removable plastic tab that protects the battery by isolating one or both of the terminals. If you’re traveling with disposable vapes that have that design feature, leave the tabs in place for an extra measure of safety.

Some airline security attendants won’t mind if you carry a disposable vape in your pocket because it’s much the same as traveling with a pack of cigarettes. Simply present the device for inspection along with the other items in your pockets; be prepared to put the device in your bag of liquid items if you’re asked to do so.

Note that if you happen to be traveling with bottled e-liquid, you’re free to carry that in your checked luggage. Vaping devices without batteries can also go in checked luggage. All vaping devices with built-in batteries need to go in your carry-on bag.

Can You Use Your Disposable Vape on an Airplane?

No; you can’t use a disposable vape or any other type of vaping device on an airplane. The rules regarding vaping and smoking on airliners are very strict, and you could face a stiff punishment for disregarding those rules. Don’t try to stealth vape, and absolutely don’t try to vape in the restroom. At this point, flight personnel are all aware of what vaping is and what to be on the lookout for. You will certainly get caught. To ensure that you won’t experience uncontrollable nicotine cravings during your flight, you should travel with a nicotine replacement product such as a pack of nicotine gum or pouches.

Can You Vape at an Airport?

The first thing you need to know about vaping at an airport is that it’s essentially the same as smoking. If you just start puffing on your device in the middle of the airport, you’re going to have an unpleasant run-in with security personnel. If you have a layover during your travels and want to vape at an airport, you’ll need to find a place where smoking is allowed. In the past, that would mean visiting the airport’s smoking lounge. Virtually every airport had at least one smoking lounge for convenience.

In the age of COVID, though, airport smoking lounges have become much less common. In the interest of social distancing, many lounges were closed at the beginning of the pandemic and have since been replaced with other businesses. Even before COVID, though, smoking lounges were becoming increasingly rare as more and more airports declared themselves “smoke free.”

The best that you’ll find at most airports today is an enclosed outdoor cage or balcony where smoking and vaping are allowed – and even then, it may not be easy to find because airports typically don’t advertise their smoking areas. Don’t be afraid to ask an airport employee for help. If you’re fortunate enough to find yourself at an airport with an airside smoking area, you’re free to vape there.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that many airports are going smoke free these days, the most likely scenario is that you won’t be able to find an airside smoking area during your travels. In that case, it’ll be much more inconvenient for you to find a place where you can vape because you’ll need to leave the airport and walk some distance to an outdoor smoking area. You’ll have to take all of your things with you, and you’ll have to go through the security checkpoint again upon reentering the airport – so make sure that you have plenty of time. If you’re traveling internationally, remember that leaving the airport will also mean going through customs and entering the country.

Final Thoughts on Traveling with Disposable Vapes

As you’ve learned from reading this article, bringing disposable vapes on an airplane really isn’t difficult – you just need to adhere to the rules that apply to liquids and batteries, and you shouldn’t have a problem. Using your disposable vape during your travels, however, won’t be easy given the lack of smoking areas at many airports and the fact that you can’t vape during your flight. Although it’s possible that you’ll get lucky and find an airside smoking area during your travels, it’s much more likely that you won’t. Given how incredibly inconvenient it would be to leave an airport and reenter it just to puff on your vape a few times, it’s probably a very good idea to bring an alternative form of nicotine replacement.
