The day before we were scheduled to fly back to San Francisco, we reserved for the Road to Hana. We stopped by the little surfer town of Paia to grab some sandwiches. With a 20 dollar deposit, they also lended us this CD that describes the various sites on the journey ahead.
After Paia, signs of civilisation started thinning rapidly, and soon we were on this winding road through the tropical rainforests. I hear there are over 600 curves and 50 bridges. We didn't keep count, but I don't doubt those numbers. Looking back at my folder of photos taken that day, I have to say that the keyword of the day was green, about a thousand shades of them.
We skipped the first waterfall on some pretty good advice, but there were plenty more to come on the trip ahead. We chose Waikamoi Ridge to be our first stop, and did a short hike that yielded great views of the bamboo groves. Did you know that bamboo is the longest grass in the world, and sugar cane is the second? Our tour guide from our Haleakala bike ride told us, ha!
