Palapala Ho'omau Congregational Church


Well, Oheo Gulch was the climax of this journey, but there was still one last destination left on our agenda - to pay homage to the final resting place of Charles Lindbergh. Heading west of Oheo Gulch, we passed many a secluded home, looking for the Palapala Ho'omau Congregational Church. The church itself is hidden away in a unmarked corner of Kipahulu. We definitely would not have been able to find it without the help of our Lonely Planet guide, and even then, we had to double back a couple of times before we found the correct turn-off.

It is a quiet place for someone as famous as Lindbergh to spend the final years of his life, but it was not hard to imagine why. The churchyard in the back is an infinitely peaceful place. All you had to do was to look out at the ocean, and you will never want to leave. There are bouquets of fresh flowers left on the grave, and there is an inscription there that says "If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea…"
